Abstract

Contains the definitions related to, and the general requirements to be fulfilled by, industrial rigid laminated sheets for electrical purposes, made with any of the following resins as the binder: epoxy (epoxide), melamine, phenolic, polyimide, silicone and unsaturated polyester. The following reinforcements may be used either singly or in combination; cellulosic paper, cotton cloth, glass cloth, glass roving, glass mat, polyester cloth and wood veneers. Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this specification alone. The major changes from the previous edition of EN 60893-1 are the following: a) new material types have been included; b) changes have been made to the property requirements of some existing types; c) a new method for testing permittivity and dissipation factor has been added; d) all non-specification data for each type has been moved to a new Part 4 of EN 60893.

SIST EN 60893-1:2004 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 60893-1:2004, identical to IEC 60893-1:2004, for insulating materials used in electrical applications. It specifies the definitions, designations and general requirements for industrial rigid laminated sheets based on thermosetting resins, so manufacturers, suppliers, purchasers and users have a common basis for identifying and selecting these materials. The standard covers the sheet types, how they are designated, and the basic requirements for appearance, dimensions, supply and marking.

What does SIST EN 60893-1:2004 specify?

SIST EN 60893-1:2004 applies to industrial rigid laminated sheets for electrical purposes made with thermosetting resin binders and specified reinforcements. It gives the common language and general acceptance rules for the series, while the detailed type-by-type data are handled in the companion parts.

The scope includes these binder resins: epoxy (epoxide), melamine, phenolic, polyimide, silicone and unsaturated polyester. It also allows these reinforcements, used alone or in combination: cellulosic paper, cotton cloth, glass cloth, glass roving, glass mat, polyester cloth and wood veneers.

The standard is organized into clauses for scope, normative references, definitions, designation, general requirements and conditions of supply. Annex ZA links the referenced international publications to their corresponding European publications.

AnnexWhat it covers
ZANormative references to international publications and their corresponding European publications

In practice, the scope note matters because conformity to the standard is not, by itself, enough to choose a material for a particular job. Selection still has to match the actual electrical, mechanical and environmental needs of the application.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60893-1:2004?

Clause 3 defines the product family as sheets made from layers of reinforcement impregnated with thermosetting resin and bonded under heat and pressure into one piece. This matters because the standard is aimed at a specific laminate construction, not just any plastic sheet.

Clause 4 sets the designation system. A sheet is identified by the IEC standard number, a two-letter resin code, a two-letter reinforcement code, a serial number, and nominal thickness, width and length in millimetres. In practice, this gives buyers and specifiers a short ordering code that identifies both the material family and the size.

Clause 4 also gives the resin and reinforcement abbreviations, including EP, MF, PF, UP, SI and PI for the resins, and CC, CP, GC, GM, PC, WV and CR for the reinforcements. CR means combination reinforcement. This matters when comparing offers or matching a purchase order to a material grade.

Clause 5 requires all material in one consignment to fall within the limits of the standard. For users, that means one delivery should behave consistently in storage, fabrication and service.

Clause 5.1 sets the visual acceptance condition: laminates should be free from blisters, wrinkles and cracks, and reasonably free from scratches, dents, ripples and discoloration, with only a small amount of mottle allowed. That gives receiving inspection a clear visual check before the material is put into production.

Clause 5.2 says sheet sizes are agreed between purchaser and supplier, and sheets are normally supplied trimmed unless the relevant Part 3 specification or the agreement says otherwise. Clause 5.3 points to the preferred nominal thicknesses in Table 1 and requires thickness deviation to stay within the value specified in Part 3, as measured by IEC 60893-2. In practice, size and thickness control affect machining allowance, fit and electrical design.

Clause 6 covers supply conditions. The packing has to protect the material during transport, handling and storage, and the package marking has to show the IEC designation and the number of sheets or mass. Any marking on individual sheets is by contract, and stamped markings must not impair electrical properties.

What terms does SIST EN 60893-1:2004 define?

  • Industrial rigid laminated sheets - Sheets made from superimposed layers of reinforcement impregnated with thermosetting resin and bonded into a single piece under heat and pressure.
  • Epoxy resin [epoxide resin] - A synthetic resin containing epoxide groups and formulated to cross-link.
  • Melamine resin - An amino resin made by polycondensation of melamine with formaldehyde or a similar bridge-forming compound.
  • Phenolic resin - A resin class made by polycondensation of phenol, its homologues and/or derivatives, with formaldehyde.
  • Unsaturated polyester resin - A polymer with carbon-carbon unsaturation that allows later cross-linking with an unsaturated monomer or pre-polymer.
  • Silicone resin - A resin with alternating silicon and oxygen atoms in the main chain and carbon-containing side groups, formulated to cross-link.
  • Polyimide resin - A synthetic resin obtained by polycondensation of aromatic diamines and aromatic dianhydrides.
  • Combination reinforcement [CR] - A laminate reinforcement made from more than one reinforcement type, with the exact composition given in the relevant Part 3 sheet.

Who uses SIST EN 60893-1:2004?

SIST EN 60893-1:2004 is used by people who specify, make, test, buy or receive industrial rigid laminated sheets for electrical purposes. That includes manufacturers, suppliers, purchasers, quality control staff and test laboratories.

It is especially useful when a project needs a shared material designation, a basic acceptance check on appearance and thickness, and a reference point before moving to the detailed material sheets in Part 3 and the test methods in Part 2. In practice, it helps align purchasing, incoming inspection and material selection in electrotechnical applications.

What changed in SIST EN 60893-1:2004 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60893-1:2004 supersedes EN 60893-1:1994 and is the second edition of IEC 60893-1, replacing the first edition published in 1987.

The changes stated for this edition are:

  • new material types have been included
  • property requirements have been changed for some existing types
  • a new method for testing permittivity and dissipation factor has been added
  • all non-specification data for each type has been moved to IEC/TR 60893-4, Typical values

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60893-1:2004?

SIST EN 60893-1:2004 is used with IEC 60893-2, which provides the methods of test needed to measure the properties and thickness referenced by this part. It is also used with IEC 60893-3 (all parts), which gives the specifications for individual materials, and with IEC 60893-4, which contains typical values.

The text also points to IEC 60893-3-1 in the bibliography, where requirements for types of industrial rigid laminated sheets are given, and it bases its definitions on ISO 472. Annex ZA lists the corresponding European publications for the referenced international documents.

What does the SIST EN 60893-1:2004 document contain?

SIST EN 60893-1:2004 contains the definitions, designation rules, general requirements and supply conditions for industrial rigid laminated sheets based on thermosetting resins. It also gives a worked designation format and the resin and reinforcement code system used for ordering and identification.

Table 1 lists the preferred nominal thicknesses for all types, while clause 5 sets the visual, dimensional and thickness-related expectations. Annex ZA gives the reference map to related European publications, which is useful when the standard is applied in a European conformity framework.
