Overview

SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 specifies requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes, particularly those made from polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) films. These tapes are commonly used as electrical insulation materials in the electrical and electronics industries. Compliance with this standard indicates that a product meets established performance requirements, but users must ensure the chosen material fits the specific needs of their applications.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes based on polyethylene and polypropylene films, intended mainly for electrical insulation applications.
  • Material Types:
    • Polyethylene film tapes with different thermal indices (75 or 90) and minimum temperature ratings (–10°C, –18°C, –33°C).
    • Polypropylene film tapes with a thermal index of 105, using various adhesive systems (acrylic crosslinked, rubber thermosetting, acrylic thermoplastic).
  • Key Performance Criteria:
    • Thermal endurance: Specifies minimum thermal indices and test temperatures.
    • Low temperature performance: Ensures tapes function at sub-zero temperatures required for specific electrical environments.
    • Electrical properties: Requirements for insulation resistance, dielectric breakdown voltage, and electrolytic corrosion protection.
  • Testing and Compliance: References to IEC 60454-1 and IEC 60454-2 for general requirements and testing methods ensure consistency in assessment and performance verification.
  • Product Classification: Detailed designation system for distinguishing products by their film type, performance class, and adhesive system.

Applications

Pressure-sensitive adhesive PE and PP film tapes are essential in a variety of electrical applications where reliable insulation and mechanical performance are critical. Key use cases include:

  • Electrical insulation of wires, cables, and components: These tapes protect against electrical leakage, short circuits, and environmental factors such as moisture or dust.
  • Wire harnessing and bundling: The tapes are used to organize and secure wire assemblies in electronic devices, automotive systems, and industrial equipment.
  • Phase identification and color coding: Different tape colors can be used for marking and identification in complex wiring systems.
  • Splicing and wrapping: Effective for joining or repairing cables and adding an additional protective layer.
  • General-purpose masking or surface protection in electronics assembly and repair.

The selection of polyethylene or polypropylene film tapes depends on the required temperature resistance, dielectric strength, and environmental conditions of the intended application. Adhering to SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 ensures that tapes offer proven performance under standardized test conditions, promoting safety and reliability in end-use environments.

Related Standards

Products conforming to SIST EN 60454-3-12:2006 should also meet relevant requirements described in associated international standards, including:

  • IEC 60454-1: General requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes.
  • IEC 60454-2: Standard test methods for evaluating adhesive tape performance.
  • IEC 60426: Test methods for determining electrolytic corrosion with insulating materials.

These related standards offer comprehensive guidance on general performance, test methodologies, and safety considerations for electrical insulating materials, supporting manufacturers and users in selecting the right tape for electrical insulation and protection tasks.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of
patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
