SIST EN 300 422-2 V1.2.2:2008 is a harmonized European standard for wireless microphones in the 25 MHz to 3 GHz range. It specifies the radio spectrum and electromagnetic compatibility requirements used to show conformity with Article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive for the product types in scope.

What does SIST EN 300 422-2 V1.2.2:2008 specify?

SIST EN 300 422-2 V1.2.2:2008 covers radio equipment operating between 25 MHz and 3 GHz using analogue, digital, or hybrid modulation. It is aimed at wireless microphone and related equipment, and it defines the requirements and test routes used for spectrum efficiency and harmful-interference avoidance.

The scope includes:

  • professional hand held radio microphones
  • professional body worn radio microphones
  • in ear monitoring systems
  • consumer radio microphones
  • tour guide systems
  • Assistive Listening Devices

The scope also states a recommended maximum power of 250 mW, using erp below 1 GHz and eirp above 1 GHz. In practice, that helps designers and buyers check whether a product family sits within the intended operating envelope.

TDMA-modulated radio microphones and in ear monitoring equipment are outside the scope. The document also notes that other ENs may apply when equipment must meet other essential requirements of the R&TTE Directive.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AHS Requirements and conformance Test specifications Table (HS-RTT)
Annex BEN title in the official languages

The document is organized into clauses on scope, references, definitions, technical requirements, and compliance testing, followed by the two annexes.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 422-2 V1.2.2:2008?

SIST EN 300 422-2 V1.2.2:2008 focuses on a small set of transmitter and receiver radio requirements, plus how to test them. The practical message is simple: declare the operating environment, measure the right radio parameters, and keep the recorded uncertainty within the stated limits.

Environmental profile and test conditions

Clause 4.1 says the supplier shall declare the environmental profile for operation, and the equipment shall meet the requirements whenever it operates within that profile. Clause 5.1 then requires testing at representative points within the declared limits. For users and labs, this means the chosen temperature, supply and operating conditions must reflect real use, not only ideal bench conditions.

Transmitter requirements

Clause 4.2 covers four transmitter items:

  • frequency stability
  • rated output power
  • necessary bandwidth
  • spurious emissions

For each item, the requirement refers to limits and definitions in EN 300 422-1, and the matching test is listed in clause 5.3.1. This matters because conformity is not judged by design intent alone - it is checked by measurement against the referenced limits.

Necessary bandwidth uses different limits for analogue and digital systems. That is important when a product line uses more than one modulation type, because the engineer must apply the correct limit to each variant.

Receiver requirement

Clause 4.3 covers receiver spurious emissions, with the test in clause 5.3.2. In practice, this prevents a receiver from creating unintended emissions that could interfere with other spectrum users.

Measurement results and uncertainty

Clause 5.2 requires the measured value to be compared directly with the limit, and the test report shall include measurement uncertainty. The uncertainty figures must not exceed the values in Table 1, with calculations based on TR 100 028 or TR 102 215 as appropriate. For testing teams, this affects how results are reported and whether a borderline result can be defended.

Essential Radio Test Suite

Annex A marks the listed transmitter and receiver tests as essential. That means they form the core evidence for presumption of conformity under Article 3.2.

What terms does SIST EN 300 422-2 V1.2.2:2008 define?

  • ERM - the ETSI area for electromagnetic compatibility and radio spectrum matters.
  • R&TTE Directive - Directive 1999/5/EC, the legal framework referenced by the standard.
  • TDMA - Time Division Multiple Access; equipment using TDMA modulation is outside the scope.
  • environmental profile - the declared operating conditions within which compliance must hold.
  • HS-RTT - the Annex A table that links requirements to test specifications and their applicability.
  • Essential Radio Test Suite - the set of tests marked essential in Annex A; these are the core conformity tests.

Who uses SIST EN 300 422-2 V1.2.2:2008?

Manufacturers and suppliers of wireless microphones, in ear monitoring systems, tour guide systems, and Assistive Listening Devices use this standard when defining product variants and preparing conformity evidence. Test laboratories use it to select the correct transmitter and receiver measurements, including the uncertainty reporting rules.

Quality managers, technical file owners, and buyers use it to check whether a product is covered by the right radio standard and whether the declared operating profile matches intended use. It is also relevant for conformity assessment work linked to the R&TTE Directive.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 422-2 V1.2.2:2008?

EN 300 422-1 is the companion part and the key normative reference. It supplies the definitions, symbols, abbreviations, technical characteristics, limits, and measurement methods that this part points to for frequency stability, output power, bandwidth, and emissions.

ETSI TR 100 028 and ETSI TR 102 215 are referenced for measurement uncertainty calculations. Directive 1999/5/EC gives the legal requirement addressed by the standard, and Directive 98/34/EC is cited for the standards process context. ETSI EG 201 399 is cited as guidance for producing candidate harmonized standards.

What does the SIST EN 300 422-2 V1.2.2:2008 document contain?

The document contains the scope, reference framework, definitions section, and the technical requirements for transmitter and receiver performance. Clause 5 gives the compliance test suites and the rules for environmental conditions and measurement uncertainty.

Annex A is the main compliance map: it cross-references each requirement with its test clause, states whether the requirement is unconditional, and identifies the tests as essential. Annex B provides the standard title in the official languages.

The body and annexes together give users a compact route from product type, to requirement, to test method, to compliance evidence.

Foreword This Harmonized European Standard (Telecommunications series) has been produced by ETSI Technical Committee Electromagnetic compatibility and Radio spectrum Matters (ERM). The present document has been produced by ETSI in response to a mandate from the European Commission issued under Council Directive 98/34/EC [3] (as amended) laying down a procedure for the provision of information in the field of technical standards and regulations. The present document is intended to become a Harmonized Standard, the reference of which will be published in the Official Journal of the European Communities referencing the Directive 1999/5/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 1999 on radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment and the mutual recognition of their conformity ("the R&TTE Directive") [2]. Technical specifications relevant to Directive 1999/5/EC [2] are given in annex A. The present document is part 2 of a multi-part deliverable. Full details of the entire series can be found in part 1 EN 300 422-1 [1]. National regulations on maximum power output will apply.
