Overview
SIST EN ISO 20877:2011 is an international standard that defines test methods for evaluating the thermal insulation properties of footwear. Developed by ISO and adopted by CEN, this standard applies to all types of closed footwear and boots, excluding personal protective equipment. Its primary purpose is to measure how well footwear insulates against heat and cold, providing essential data for assessing wearer comfort in various environmental conditions. By standardizing the testing process, SIST EN ISO 20877:2011 helps manufacturers, designers, and quality control professionals ensure consistent and reliable thermal performance in footwear products.
Key Topics
- Thermal Insulation Measurement: The standard specifies procedures for determining the temperature difference on the inner surface of footwear components such as the vamp or insoles under controlled test conditions.
- Test Conditions for Heat and Cold:
- Cold insulation tests utilize an insulated cold box with temperatures regulated between -5°C and -20°C, according to the footwear’s intended use.
- Heat insulation tests employ a hot plate maintained between 50°C and 100°C, depending on the footwear type.
- Sampling & Preparation: A minimum of two complete footwear items are used per test. Preparation follows complementary methods outlined in ISO 20344:2011, ensuring standardized handling and conditioning before testing.
- Testing Procedures: Tests follow strict protocols to ensure accuracy and reproducibility, including using specific apparatus compliant with ISO 20344 for both heat and cold insulation assessments.
- Reporting Requirements: The test report must detail the standard reference, insulation type, test temperature, any physical changes in the shoe, temperature differences observed, average values, sample descriptions, sampling methods, and any deviations from the test procedure.
Applications
- Footwear Design and Development: Footwear manufacturers use SIST EN ISO 20877:2011 methods to select materials and construction techniques that optimize thermal comfort, enhancing user experience in cold or hot environments.
- Quality Control: During production, testing ensures that footwear meets defined thermal insulation criteria for consistent performance.
- Product Certification and Marketing: Compliance with this standard provides verifiable data on thermal insulation, supporting claims of comfort and suitability for specific climates or applications.
- Research and Innovation: Researchers can evaluate new materials and technologies aimed at improving insulation properties in footwear to meet evolving consumer needs.
Related Standards
- ISO 19952 - Footwear Vocabulary: Provides terminology foundational to understanding and applying footwear standards including EN ISO 20877.
- ISO 20344:2011 - Personal Protective Equipment - Test Methods for Footwear: Details testing methods referenced within EN ISO 20877, especially for preparing test samples and executing heat and cold insulation tests.
- EN 12784:1999: The previous European standard replaced by SIST EN ISO 20877:2011, reflecting updated and harmonized test methods.
This standard supports the footwear industry in delivering products with scientifically validated thermal insulation properties, ultimately enhancing wearer comfort in diverse environments while providing clear, reproducible testing guidelines.
