SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026
(Amendment)Efficiency of domestic electrical storage water heaters and testing methods
- Abstract
This European Standard specifies methods for measuring the performance of electric storage water
heaters for the production of sanitary hot water for household and similar use.
The object is to state and define the principal performance characteristics of electric storage water
heaters and to describe the test methods for measuring these characteristics.
NOTE 1 This standard does not apply to;
− storage water heaters that use electricity as a secondary source of heating the water;
− storage water heaters that do not use a tank to store hot water;
− electric storage water heaters that do not meet the minimum (or maximum) output performance of the smallest (or biggest)
load profile, as defined in Table 4.
NOTE 2 This standard does not specify performance or safety requirements. For safety requirements see EN 60335-1:2020 in
conjunction with EN 60335-2-21:2023

SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026 is a CENELEC amendment, published by SIST, that updates EN 50440:2015 for domestic electric storage water heaters. It specifies how to measure performance and how to verify load profiles, calculate efficiency-related values, and report results for heaters used to produce sanitary hot water for household and similar use.
What does SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026 specify?
SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026 amends the European test standard for electric storage water heaters. It keeps the focus on performance measurement, not on safety design, and it ties the document to the load profiles and calculation methods used for efficiency assessment.
| Part of the document | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Clause 1 | Scope note updates and the link to separate safety standards |
| Clause 3 | Added term for rated heat output |
| Clause 4 | Symbols and units used in the calculations and report |
| Clause 7 | General conditions for measurements and tolerances |
| Clause 8 | General test conditions, load profiles and profile verification |
| Clause 9 | Test procedures, formulas, rated heat output and sound power level |
| Clause 10 | Data report content |
| Annex A | Calculation of specific energy efficiency and annual electricity consumption |
| Bibliography | Safety reference for storage water heaters |
The scope note keeps the exclusions for heaters that use electricity only as a secondary heating source, heaters without a tank for hot water storage, and heaters outside the smallest or biggest load profile defined in Table 4. In practice, that means the standard is meant for tank-type electric storage water heaters that fit the declared load-profile range.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026?
The amendment changes the measurement setup, the load-profile verification logic, and the reporting data that test laboratories and manufacturers have to use.
Measurement conditions and tolerances
Clause 7 replaces the test-condition table. It sets the timing, sampling and uncertainty limits for the test, including the maximum sampling interval during hot-water delivery and during no delivery, cold water temperature and pressure, hot-water temperature pattern, flowrate pattern, volume measurements, thermal energy, and ambient air temperature. It also introduces a correction factor based on the ratio between reference energy and the energy content of the water actually delivered.
In practice, the test rig has to be controlled tightly enough that the measured result is comparable from one lab to another.
Load profiles and verification
Clause 8 adds and revises the load-profile framework. Table 4 now shows the draw-off schedule and reference energy for the load profiles from 3XS to 4XL, and the text adds a procedure to check whether the declared load profile is coherent with the maximum load profile or the one immediately below it.
For energized storage water heaters, Clause 8.2.2 uses Table 5 and Table 6 to check three things: ability to meet instant needs, ability to supply the minimum quantity of water at 40 °C, and the temperature after the largest one-hour-and-half sum of draw-offs. For off-peak storage water heaters, Clause 8.2.3 uses a similar two-condition check and assumes a declared load profile at or above M.
Test procedure and rated heat output
Clause 9 states that electricity consumption is measured during step 2. It also adds the definition of rated heat output, calculated from electrical energy efficiency and nominal power input.
That matters because the report now includes a direct performance value in kW, and the calculation refers back to the appliance’s declared nominal power input.
Sound power level
Clause 9.3 gives a default sound power level of 15 dB for electric storage water heaters without moving parts. This gives a standard value for reporting where a measured sound result is not the focus of the assessment.
Data report and Annex A
Clause 10 adds rated heat output to the data report. Annex A updates the calculation of specific energy efficiency and annual electricity consumption, including the conversion coefficient of electricity in primary energy.
What terms does SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026 define?
- Rated heat output (P) - the heat output of the water heater at standard rating conditions, expressed in kW.
- Declared load profile (LPdec) - the load profile the manufacturer claims for the appliance.
- Maximum load profile (LPmax) - the highest load profile the appliance can meet under the verification rules.
- Heat-up electricity consumption (Qheat-up) - the electricity consumed during the heat-up period, measured in step 2.
- Nominal power input (Pnom) - the power input assigned to the appliance by the manufacturer.
- Reference energy (Qref) - the energy reference used for the load-profile tables and related calculations.
- Equivalent energy at 40 °C (Qequiv40) - the calculated energy used to check the minimum quantity of water delivered at 40 °C.
Who uses SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026?
Manufacturers use SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026 when they design electric storage water heaters and declare load profiles or efficiency-related values. Test laboratories use it to set up measurements, run the prescribed tests and prepare data reports.
Quality managers, conformity assessors and buyers use it to compare products on the same technical basis. It is also relevant in the household and similar electrical appliance sector, especially for water heating equipment.
What changed in SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026 modifies EN 50440:2015. The amendment adds a rated heat output term, updates symbols and measurement tolerances, revises the load-profile tables and verification procedure, adds a default sound power level, updates the data report, and adjusts Annex A calculations.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026?
- EN 50440:2015 - the base standard that this amendment modifies.
- EN IEC 60335-1 - the safety standard pointed to for general safety requirements.
- EN IEC 60335-2-21 - the safety standard for storage water heaters, also cited for the verification of nominal power input.
What does the SIST EN 50440:2016/A2:2026 document contain?
The document contains revised tables, formulas and procedures rather than a simple narrative text. The key technical items are Table 3 for test conditions and tolerances, Table 4 for the load-profile schedule, Table 5 for profile-check conditions, and Table 6 for the operating points used in the verification calculations.
It also contains the calculation steps for declared load profile assessment, rated heat output, and the annual-consumption-related values in Annex A. These are the parts that engineers and labs use for test setup, calculation and reporting.
