Overview
SIST EN ISO 11432:2021 is an international standard developed by ISO/TC 59 and endorsed by CEN, specifying a reliable and reproducible method for determining the resistance to compression of sealants used in joints within buildings and civil engineering structures. This method is crucial for evaluating sealants’ mechanical performance under compressive forces, ensuring their suitability and durability in construction applications. The 2021 revision updates the earlier 2005 version and refines test conditions such as compression rates and environmental conditioning parameters to reflect current industry needs.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines the test method for assessing compressive resistance of construction sealants applied between substrates.
- Test Specimens: Sealants are applied between two parallel substrates typically made from mortar, anodized aluminum, or glass, with specific dimensions to maintain consistency. Test specimen preparation requires precise assembly to avoid air bubbles and ensure uniform contact.
- Conditioning Methods:
- Method A: Conditioning test specimens at 23°C ± 2°C and 50% ± 10% relative humidity for 28 days.
- Method B: Extended conditioning involving temperature cycles between 70°C and water immersion at 23°C to simulate environmental stresses, followed by 24 hours at standard conditions.
- Compression Testing: Performed using a tensile test machine that compresses the specimen at a controlled rate of 5.5 mm/min ± 0.5 mm/min to either 75% or 80% of the sealant width. The force exerted and the corresponding secant compression modulus are measured.
- Result Calculation: The secant compression modulus (N/mm²) is calculated for each specimen and averaged to determine the sealant’s compressive response quantitatively.
- Test Report Requirements: Comprehensive documentation including sealant type, batch, substrates used, conditioning method, compression percentage, test results, and any deviations to ensure traceability and standardized reporting.
Applications
- Building Construction: Verifying the compressive performance of sealants employed in expansion joints, facades, and window installations to maintain waterproofing and structural integrity.
- Civil Engineering Projects: Assessing sealant resilience in infrastructure works such as bridges, tunnels, and precast concrete elements subjected to compressive forces and movement.
- Quality Control: Manufacturers and testing laboratories use the standard to certify sealant products meet performance criteria before market release or installation.
- Research and Development: Enables consistent evaluation of new sealant formulations for improved mechanical properties and longevity under compression.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports adherence to national and international building codes by providing a recognized test method for sealant compression resistance.
Related Standards
- ISO 6927: Vocabulary for building and civil engineering sealants – defines terms and helps maintain consistent communication across standards and testing procedures.
- ISO 13640: Specifications for test substrates used in sealant testing – provides guidelines for the materials against which sealants are tested, ensuring repeatability and comparability of results.
- EN ISO 11600: Classification and design considerations for sealants used in construction – complements EN ISO 11432 by detailing sealant performance categories.
- ASTM C736: A comparable testing method in American standards addressing shear resistance of sealants, often referenced alongside ISO methods for comprehensive assessment.
