SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003 is the Slovenian standard identical to EN 301 087 V5.4.1 from ETSI. It specifies RF test methods and conformance requirements for GSM 900 and DCS 1800 Base Station Systems (BSS), covering radio performance on the transmitter, receiver and radio link management sides.

What does SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003 specify?

SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003 specifies how to test GSM Base Station Systems for radio compliance, and it sets both essential conformance and complete conformance requirements. It applies to BSS equipment for GSM Phase 2 and Phase 2+, and it uses declared operating bands, declared power settings and defined test environments to make results comparable in practice.

The scope includes the RF test methods derived from the core GSM specifications referenced in each test. It also states that, unless noted otherwise, tests apply to both Phase 2 and Phase 2+ BSSs, and that repeaters and other RF devices connected to a BSS antenna connector are outside the normal scope except where subclause 4.10.2 applies.

The document is organized into general conditions, transmitter tests, receiver tests, radiated spurious emissions, and radio link management. It ends with informative annexes that support statistical testing, special test equipment, sample counts and change history.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ATesting of statistical parameters
Annex BDescription of special test equipment
Annex CNumber of samples needed for statistical testing
Annex DChange history

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003?

SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003 requires the manufacturer to declare the supported bands, operating range, power reference point and optional functions before testing. Clause 4 also sets the test environments, measurement uncertainty limits, and the way laboratories select bottom, middle and top RF channels. In practice, this is what makes a test report traceable to a specific BSS configuration.

Clause 4.3 to 4.5 covers optional slow frequency hopping (SFH), RF power control and downlink discontinuous transmission (DTX). These declarations matter because several tests are run differently depending on whether the BSS hops frequency, changes power level dynamically, or uses DTX.

Clause 4.10 explains how to test non-standard BSS configurations such as receiver diversity, duplexers, ancillary RF amplifiers and BSS using antenna arrays. This is important for real deployments, because the test setup may need to include the antenna system, splitters or combiners so that the measured result reflects normal operation.

The transmitter tests in clause 6 check:

  • static Layer 1 functions, including multiplexing, coding and bit exactness
  • phase error and mean frequency error of the modulated burst
  • mean transmitted RF carrier power and static power control steps
  • transmitted power versus time, including the useful part of the burst and idle power
  • adjacent channel power and spurious emissions
  • intermodulation attenuation inside the transmitter chain and inside the BSS

These tests matter because they show whether the BSS stays on frequency, controls output power correctly and limits unwanted emissions that could disturb nearby carriers or adjacent systems.

The receiver tests in clause 7 cover static receiver functions, erroneous frame indication performance, reference sensitivity, multipath sensitivity, reference interference level, blocking, intermodulation, AM suppression and spurious emissions from the receiver connector. In practice, these tests show how well the BSS can decode wanted signals while rejecting interference, fading and unwanted inputs.

Clause 8 covers radiated spurious emissions, and clause 9 covers radio link management, including synchronisation, BCCH multiframe structure, TDMA-frame structure, signal strength, signal quality, idle channel signal level and adaptive frame alignment. These parts matter for network timing, measurement reporting and stable handover behavior.

What terms does SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003 define?

  • BSS - Base Station System; in this document it covers both a BTS and an integrated BSS.
  • BTS - Base Transceiver Station, used here as part of the BSS radio equipment under test.
  • micro-BTS - A small BTS configuration defined by the GSM radio specifications; the standard gives separate power class treatment for it.
  • BSSTE - Base Station System Test Equipment, the test equipment used for several transmitter measurements.
  • SFH - Slow Frequency Hopping; the BSS changes frequency on a time-slot basis when this function is supported.
  • DTX - Downlink discontinuous transmission; a transmit mode that may be used by the BSS.
  • B, M, T - Bottom, Middle and Top RF channels used to test the lower, middle and upper parts of the operating band.

Who uses SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003?

Manufacturers use SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003 to design and verify GSM BSS radio performance before release. Test laboratories use it to run conformance tests in a repeatable way. Operators and buyers use it when they need acceptance testing, especially for coexistence, power behavior, emission limits and receiver performance. It is also relevant to certification and type-approval work for GSM 900 and DCS 1800 infrastructure.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003?

SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003 relies on several companion GSM and ETSI documents:

  • GSM 01.04 - abbreviations and acronyms used in the document
  • GSM 05.01, 05.02, 05.03, 05.04, 05.05, 05.08, 05.10 - the core radio-path, channel coding, modulation, transmission, link control and synchronization requirements that the tests reference
  • GSM 04.22 and GSM 08.20 - interface and rate adaptation references used for some DTX and data-related cases
  • ETR 027 and ETR 028 - measurement methods and measurement uncertainty guidance
  • ETS 300 019-1, IEC 68-2 and IEC 721 - environmental classes and environmental test methods
  • ETS 300 113 - radio equipment test conditions for antenna-connector equipment

What does the SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003 document contain?

SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003 contains clause-by-clause RF test procedures, setup instructions and conformance limits for GSM BSS equipment. It includes transmitter and receiver test methods with essential and complete conformance paths, plus figures for burst power masks and antenna-array test arrangements. It also provides informative annexes on statistical methods, special test equipment, and sample sizes for statistical testing.

ETSIEN 301 087 V5.4.1 (1998-04)9GSM 11.21 version 5.4.11ScopeThis EN specifies the Radio Frequency (RF) test methods and conformance requirements for GSM 900 and DCS 1800Base Station Systems (BSS)s. These have been derived from, and are consistent with, the core GSM specificationsspecified in the requirements reference subclause of each test. This EN is applicable BSS meeting the requirements of either GSM Phase 2 or GSM Phase 2+. Unless otherwise stated, all tests are applicable to BSS meeting Phase 2 and/or Phase 2+ GSM requirements, because the requirements of thePhase 2 and Phase 2+ core GSM specifications which are referenced in the test are consistent. Most differences betweenPhase 2 and Phase 2+ requirements represent Phase 2+ features which are optional for the BSS to support. For each test, two conformance requirements are specified:-essential conformance requirements;-complete conformance requirements.Essential conformance requirements are those which are required:a)to ensure compatibility between the radio channels in the same cell;b)to ensure compatibility between cells, both co-ordinated and unco-ordinated;c)to ensure compatibility with existing systems in the same or adjacent frequency bands;d)to verify the important aspects of the transmission quality of the system.Essential conformance requirements are sufficient to verify the performance of the equipment for radio type approvalpurposes, in countries where this is applicable.Complete conformance requirements may be tested to verify all aspects of the performance of a BSS. Theserequirements are intended to be used by manufacturers and operators to allow conformance and acceptance testing to beperformed in a consistent manner; the tests to be performed should be agreed between the parties. In some tests there are separate requirements for micro-BTS and BTS. If there is no separate requirement for amicro-BTS, the requirements for the BTS apply to a micro-BTS.In the present document, the reference point for RF connections (except for the measurement of mean transmitted RFcarrier power) is the antenna connector, as defined by the manufacturer. This EN does not apply to repeaters or RFdevices which may be connected to an antenna connector of a BSS, except as specified in subclause 4.10.2Normative referencesThe following documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of the presentdocument.-References are either specific (identified by date of publication, edition number, version number, etc.) ornon-specific.-For a specific reference, subsequent revisions do not apply.-For a non-specific reference, the latest version applies.-A non-specific reference to an ETS shall also be taken to refer to later versions published as an EN with the samenumber.[1]GSM 01.04 (ETR 350): "Digital cellular telecommunications system (Phase 2+); Abbreviationsand acronyms".SIST EN 301 087 V5.4.1:2003
