Paints and varnishes - Determination of resistance to liquids - Part 4: Spotting methods (ISO 2812-4:2017)

ISO 2812-4:2017 specifies spotting methods for determining the resistance of an individual-layer or multi-layer system of coating materials to the effects of liquids or paste-like products.
These methods enable the testers to determine the effects of the test substance on the coating and, if necessary, to assess the damage to the substrate.

Barve in laki - Ugotavljanje odpornosti proti tekočinam - 4. del: Metoda s kapljanjem (ISO 2812-4:2017)

Overview

EN ISO 2812-4:2017 - Paints and varnishes: Determination of resistance to liquids - Part 4: Spotting methods specifies standardized spot-test procedures to assess how single- or multi-layer coating systems resist contact with liquids or paste‑like substances. The standard describes test principles, required apparatus, sample preparation, two practical spotting methods (horizontal and inclined), conditioning and evaluation steps, and reporting requirements. It is part of the ISO 2812 series and is adopted by CEN for use across European national standards bodies.

Keywords: EN ISO 2812-4:2017, spotting methods, resistance to liquids, coatings testing, paint test, liquid resistance.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Determines the effect of liquids/pastes on coatings and, where relevant, assesses substrate damage.
  • Test principle: Apply controlled droplets or spots of test substance on coated panels, confine them, condition, then evaluate changes.
  • Apparatus & materials: Typical lab equipment - pipette (~0.1 ml droplet), 50 ml burette, 60 mm Petri dishes, collecting vessel for inclined tests.
  • Test panels: Standard panels (approx. 150 × 100 mm; 0.7–1.0 mm thick) prepared and coated per ISO 1514; dry film thickness measured per ISO 2808.
  • Conditioning & environment: Condition panels ≥16 h at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH; perform tests at (23 ± 2) °C (ISO 3270).
  • Two methods:
    • Method A - Horizontal panel: Apply droplets or ~0.5 cm paste, cover with Petri dishes; perform duplicate tests.
    • Method B - Inclined panel: Panel at 30°; apply droplets at 1–2 s intervals for 10 min so liquid flows; perform duplicate tests.
  • Evaluation: Clean residues, assess exposed area only, evaluate blistering (ISO 4628-2) and visible alterations (ISO 4628-1); optionally perform further tests (cross-cut, hardness). Reassess after 24 h; repeat duplicates if inconsistent.
  • Reporting: Record test conditions, substances, panel preparation, results and any repeat determinations.

Applications and users

  • Quality control laboratories verifying product performance against chemical or cleaning fluids.
  • Coatings formulators and R&D teams screening formulations for resistance to oils, solvents, acids, alkalis, cleaning agents and paste-like contaminants.
  • Specifiers, certifiers and procurement teams defining performance requirements for industrial, architectural or protective coatings.
  • Independent test houses performing contract testing for manufacturers and end‑users.

Keywords: coatings durability, paint resistance testing, spot test, quality control, coatings R&D.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
