Overview
EN 14468-1:2015 (CEN) - "Table tennis - Part 1: Table tennis tables, functional and safety requirements, test methods" is the European standard that defines the functional, dimensional and safety requirements and associated test methods for table tennis tables intended only for playing table tennis. It covers five table types (stationary and various rollaway designs) and four end‑use classes (A to D), and includes provisions for tables suitable for wheelchair play. Tables installed in areas governed by EN 1176 or EN 15312 are excluded.
Key topics
- Scope & classification
- Applies to five table types and Classes A–D (competition, club, recreational).
- Defines components: tabletop, undercarriage, net assembly, legs, wheels.
- Functional requirements
- Precise dimensions and tolerances (standard tabletop length, tolerances for Classes A–D).
- Requirements for playing surface (material, flatness, finish, degree of gloss).
- Undercarriage design, leg positions, player safety area and residual height reduction.
- Special requirements for wheelchair‑accessible tables.
- Safety requirements
- Safe conditions in playing, playback and storage positions.
- Locking systems and unlocking actions to prevent unintended folding.
- Safe rolling device operation and protection of mobile parts and fixations.
- Table finish and prevention of pinch or impact hazards.
- Test methods
- Tests for flatness, ball bounce, degree of gloss, horizontal deviation, climatic stress (for outdoor tabletops), and rolling/locking device performance.
- Optional pendulum test and other practical test procedures.
- Environmental & information requirements
- Clause on environmental aspects and mandatory manufacturer information, assembly and operating instructions, and marking.
Applications & who uses it
- Manufacturers of table tennis tables - design, quality control, compliance marking.
- Testing laboratories - to perform standardized tests (ball bounce, flatness, locking devices).
- Sports facilities, clubs, schools and procurement officers - to select tables that meet competition, club or recreational class requirements.
- Designers and safety officers - to ensure tables meet player safety areas and wheelchair play requirements.
- Certification bodies and national standards organizations - for national adoption and conformity assessment.
