Overview
EN 60851-6:2012 (CLC adoption of IEC 60851-6:2012) is the industry standard that specifies thermal property test methods for winding wires. It is Part 6 of the IEC 60851 series and defines laboratory procedures to assess how enamelled and tape-wrapped winding wires behave under heat, mechanical stress at elevated temperature, and thermal degradation.
Key topics and requirements
The standard specifies four principal tests:
- Test 9 - Heat shock: evaluates the ability of enamelled and tape-wrapped wires to resist sudden temperature exposure after bending, winding or stretching. Specimen preparation follows IEC 60851-3; specimens are oven-heated for 30 minutes at a specified temperature, then inspected for cracks under magnification (magnification depends on wire dimensions).
- Test 10 - Cut-through: determines the temperature at which insulation fails (short circuit) where two wires cross under a specified load. Requires a heated metal block with slots, a ceramic piston to apply load, and a transformer (≥100 VA) delivering ~100 V with overcurrent protection; applicable to enamelled round wire (nominal diameters >0.100 mm up to 1.600 mm) and tape-wrapped round wire.
- Test 15 - Temperature index: defines the method to determine the temperature index of enamelled wires. The 2012 edition revised Test 15 so temperature index requirements for all winding wire constructions share a common reference.
- Test 21 - Loss of mass: measures mass loss on heating (applicable to enamelled round wire) as an indicator of thermal decomposition.
Additional technical details:
- Specimen preparation references IEC 60851-3 (mechanical properties).
- Test procedures include required equipment, measurement tolerances (e.g., temperature control near crossing point for Test 10 ±3 °C), and sample counts (e.g., three specimens for round wire in Test 9).
- The 2012 edition supersedes earlier revisions and removed some previous prescriptions (e.g., deletion of a heating-period table in Test 10).
Applications and users
This standard is essential for:
- Manufacturers of winding wires (enamelled and tape-wrapped) for product development and quality control.
- Motor, transformer and coil designers assessing insulation thermal performance.
- Test laboratories performing certification, type testing and incoming inspection.
- Procurement and compliance teams specifying thermal requirements for winding wire suppliers.
Using EN 60851-6 helps ensure reliable thermal performance of windings in electrical equipment, reduces risk of insulation failure, and supports compliance with IEC/CENELEC harmonized test methods.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
