SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1 for marine MF/HF radiotelephone transmitters and receivers. It specifies EMC test conditions, performance assessment and performance criteria for equipment used in the maritime mobile service, including associated ancillary equipment. In practice, it gives manufacturers and test labs a common way to check how these radios behave under electromagnetic disturbance on board ships.

What does SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005 specify?

SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005 covers the EMC assessment of MF/HF radiotelephone transmitters and receivers for the maritime mobile service, together with associated ancillary equipment. The document sets the product-specific test conditions, performance assessment method and performance criteria used with EN 301 843-1.

The document is organized into scope, references, definitions and symbols, test conditions, performance assessment, performance criteria, and applicability overview. It also has two informative annexes.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AExamples of MF/HF marine radiotelephone equipment in scope
Annex BThe EN title in the official languages

The scope keeps the focus on EMC-related checking for shipborne MF/HF radiotelephone equipment. Technical specifications for the antenna port and enclosure port are handled in related product standards for effective use of the radio spectrum.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005?

Clause 4 uses the general test conditions of EN 301 843-1, but adds product-specific conditions for marine radiotelephone equipment. Tests are carried out at a normal operating temperature and humidity point, with the equipment connected to its normal power supply, so results reflect realistic shipboard use.

  • Clause 4.2.3 sets the wanted RF input signal for receiver tests by band and emission class. For practical testing, this means the lab must use the right input level and modulation for MF or HF, and for J3E or F1B, so the receiver is judged under the intended service condition.
  • Clause 4.3 defines exclusion bands. For receivers, the band is based on the declared switching range with added margins; for transmitters, it is ±50 kHz around the nominal operating frequency. This tells the tester where not to expect meaningful EMC results because the wanted signal or normal operation would be affected.
  • Clause 4.4 treats narrowband responses on receivers specially. If an unwanted response reduces SINAD below 20 dB at the measured speech output level, immunity tests are not applied at that frequency. This avoids classifying known receiver responses as EMC failures.
  • Clause 4.5 defines normal test modulation. It gives the receive and transmit modulations for J3E and F1B, including DSC use with analogue or digital interfaces. In practice, the same test signals are used every time, so results can be compared across laboratories.
  • Clause 4.6 specifies artificial antennae and test loads. The transmitter is tested on a non-radiating load matched to the band, and the receiver is tested with a defined source. That lets EMC testing be done without using the actual ship antenna.
  • Clause 6.2 allows self-recoverable degradation during transient tests, but the EUT shall not unintentionally transmit or change operating state or stored data. This matters because a short disturbance should not cause unsafe or persistent behaviour.
  • Clauses 6.4.1 and 6.4.2 define performance checks for transmitter and receiver. The transmitter frequency error and RF output power are checked at set test frequencies, and the receiver sensitivity is checked using SINAD and standard output power. These checks show whether the equipment still performs its communication function after testing.
  • Clause 5.5 classifies radiotelephone transmitters and receivers as mobile marine radio equipment. That helps users apply the document to shipborne equipment, not to general-purpose radio products.

What terms does SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005 define?

  • standard output power - The receiver audio output level used as the reference for performance checks: earphone, loudspeaker, or audio line output.
  • SINAD - Signal plus Noise plus Distortion divided by Noise plus Distortion; it is used to judge receiver sensitivity and unwanted responses.
  • DSC - Digital Selective Calling, a signalling mode used in maritime radio systems.
  • EUT - Equipment Under Test, the radio or ancillary equipment being evaluated.
  • J3E - Single sideband telephony with suppressed carrier and analogue information.
  • F1B - A digital mode used for telegraphy or DSC-related operation with quantized or digital information.

Who uses SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005?

SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005 is used by manufacturers of shipborne MF/HF radiotelephone transmitters, receivers and ancillary equipment. EMC test laboratories use it to set up receiver input signals, artificial antennae, exclusion bands and performance checks.

It is also relevant to quality managers, conformity assessment teams and buyers who need to confirm that marine radio equipment has been tested in a consistent way. In procurement and certification work, the document helps identify whether the equipment has been assessed for the maritime mobile service on board ships.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005?

  • ETSI EN 301 843-1 - Provides the common technical requirements for the series and is the base document used with this part.
  • ETSI EN 300 373-2 - Covers harmonized requirements for maritime mobile transmitters and receivers in the MF and HF bands under the R&TTE Directive.
  • ETSI EN 300 373-3 - Covers harmonized requirements under article 3.3(e) of the R&TTE Directive for the same MF and HF maritime equipment.
  • CENELEC EN 60945 - Identifies the shipboard electromagnetic environment used in developing the technical specifications and gives general maritime testing methods and required results.

What does the SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005 document contain?

The document contains test arrangements for transmitter and receiver inputs and outputs, exclusion band definitions, normal test modulation, and artificial antenna configurations. It also sets out performance criteria for continuous and transient phenomena, power supply failure, and equipment that does not provide a continuous communication link.

Clause 7 provides an applicability overview for emission and immunity measurements and includes a special conditions table for immunity testing. Annex A gives examples of MF/HF marine radiotelephone equipment in scope, and Annex B lists the EN title in official languages.

1999 on radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment and the mutual recognition of their conformity
(the "R&TTE Directive" [2]).
The present document is part 5 of a multi-part deliverable. Full details of the entire series can be found in part 1 [1].

and receivers for the maritime mobile service, and ancillary equipment in respect of ElectroMagnetic Compatibility
(EMC).
Technical specifications related to the antenna port and emissions from the enclosure port of marine radiotelephone
transmitters and receivers are not included in the present document. Such technical specifications are found in the
related product standards for the effective use of the radio spectrum.
The present document specifies the applicable test conditions, performance assessment, and performance criteria for
radiotelephone transmitters and receivers for the maritime mobile service and the associated ancillary equipment.
Examples of types of MF/HF radiotelephone transmitters and receivers for the maritime mobile service covered by the
present document are given in annex A.
In case of differences (for instance concerning special conditions, definitions, abbreviations) between the present
document and EN 301 843-1 [1], the provisions of the present document take precedence.
The electromagnetic environment used in the present document to develop the technical specifications encompasses the
electromagnetic environment onboard ships as identified in EN 60945 [5].
