Overview

The oSIST prEN ISO 4029:2025:2025 standard, titled Fasteners - Hexagon socket set screws with cup point, is a critical international document developed by CEN in collaboration with ISO/TC 2/SC 11. It specifies the dimensions, requirements, mechanical properties, and marking of hexagon socket set screws with cup points for metric threads ranging from M1.6 up to M30 for steel, and M1.6 to M24 for stainless steel, under product grade A.

This updated 2025 edition supersedes the previous ISO 4029:2003, incorporating enhanced technical revisions, such as the addition of M30 sizes for steel screws, updated marking and labeling requirements, and the exclusion of non-ferrous metal screws.

Key Topics

  • Scope & Application:
    Applies to hexagon socket set screws with cup point and coarse metric pitch threads from M1.6 up to M30 (steel) or M24 (stainless steel). Designed primarily for fastening applications where tensile loads are not predominant.

  • Dimensions & Tolerances:
    Comprehensive dimensional specifications, including thread pitch, lengths, and socket geometry, conforming to related ISO standards such as ISO 225, ISO 724, and ISO 4759-1.

    • Standard and short lengths with chamfering options detailed.
    • Dimensional tolerances ensure interchangeability and quality control.
  • Materials & Mechanical Properties:
    The standard covers steel and stainless steel variants with prescribed hardness classes:

    • Steel: Hardness class 45H.
    • Stainless steel: Grades A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 with hardness classes 12H to 21H according to ISO 3506-3.
      Additional requirements for coatings and surface finishes include electroplated and non-electrolytically applied zinc flake coatings.
  • Coatings & Surface Integrity:
    Surface conditions range from as-processed to passivated for stainless steel, ensuring corrosion resistance and durability, as governed by ISO 4042 and ISO 10683.

  • Marking & Labelling:
    Product marking on screws is optional unless specified by purchaser. Packaging labeling must include:

    • Reference to ISO 4029 standard, thread size, nominal length, hardness or grade class, surface finish, manufacturer identification, batch number, and quantity.
  • Designation System:
    Descriptions follow ISO 8991 guidelines, incorporating thread size, product grade, material hardness, and surface condition. Examples illustrate the proper designation format for steel and stainless steel screws.

Applications

Hexagon socket set screws with cup points are widely used in industries requiring secure fastening without external heads, for applications including:

  • Mechanical assemblies
  • Automotive components
  • Machinery where flush fastening is critical
  • Precision instruments
  • Electrical and electronic assemblies requiring reliable, adjustable fastening without tensile load

The cup point ensures firm gripping of assembled parts, preventing loosening under vibration or stress. Their metric sizing and standardized dimensions guarantee compatibility across global manufacturing and maintenance operations.

Related Standards

oSIST prEN ISO 4029:2025:2025 references and aligns with the following international standards to ensure consistency and interoperability:

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that
this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at

related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to the World Trade
Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see www.iso.org/iso/foreword.html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners, Subcommittee SC 11, Fasteners
with metric external thread, in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN)
Technical Committee CEN/TC 185, Fasteners, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation
between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 4026:2003), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— M30 has been added for steel hexagon socket set screws;
— approximate masses have been deleted in length table;
— non-ferrous metal screws have been deleted (as a consequence of the withdrawal of ISO 8839);
— for stainless steel fasteners, “Plain” has been changed to “Clean and bright”, and “Passivated” has been
added in Table 3;
— specifications for marking and labelling have been added as Clause 6.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www.iso.org/members.html.

Fasteners - Hexagon socket set screws with cup point
1 Scope
This document specifies the characteristics of hexagon socket set screws with cup point, with metric coarse
pitch threads M1,6 to M30 for steel and M1,6 to M24 for stainless steel, and with product grade A.
Set screws are not intended for use under tensile load.
If in certain cases other specifications are requested, hardness classes and stainless steel grades can be
