Overview
SIST EN 303 204 V2.1.2:2016 (identical to ETSI EN 303 204 V2.1.2 (2016-09)) is a harmonised European standard for Network Based Short Range Devices (SRD) operating in the 870 MHz to 876 MHz band with power levels up to 500 mW. It provides technical requirements and test criteria to demonstrate that radio equipment effectively uses and supports the efficient use of the radio spectrum and avoids harmful interference. As a harmonised standard, it covers the essential requirements of Article 3.2 of Directive 2014/53/EU (EMC).
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
The standard specifies technical requirements, conformance tests and limits for Network Based SRD and Network Relay Points. Major topics include:
Device types and scope
- Network Based SRDs (devices that operate as part of SRD networks)
- Network Relay Points (devices that interconnect SRD networks with external networks/services)
- Applicable to fixed, vehicle-mounted, and carried/attached equipment
Transmitter requirements
- Frequency tolerance and stability (including low-voltage conditions)
- Effective radiated power (ERP) and transient power characteristics
- Occupied bandwidth and spectral masks
- Unwanted emissions (out-of-band and spurious emissions)
- Duty cycle and short-term transmission behaviour
- Automatic/adaptive power control mechanisms
Receiver requirements
- Receiver sensitivity and performance
- Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) thresholds
- Adjacent channel selectivity and blocking performance
- Receiver spurious radiations
Spectrum access and coexistence
- General spectrum access limits
- Listen-Before-Talk (LBT) procedures and conformance
- Channel adaptivity and strategies to reduce interference
Conformance framework
- Environmental profile, performance criteria, limits and test methods defined for certification and compliance.
Practical Applications
This harmonised standard is intended for radio equipment used in networked short-range applications, such as:
- Industrial and commercial telemetry systems
- Smart metering, utility networks and metering gateways
- Asset tracking and fleet management (vehicle-fixed SRDs)
- Building automation, sensor networks and industrial IoT applications
- Network relay points/gateways that link SRD networks to external services
Who Would Use This Standard
- RF product designers and hardware engineers developing SRD devices
- Compliance and certification teams preparing CE marking under the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU)
- Test laboratories performing EMC, spectrum and RF conformance testing
- Product managers and system integrators specifying networked SRD solutions
- Regulators and spectrum managers assessing device coexistence
