Overview
EN ISO 22553-4:2020 - Paints and varnishes: Electro-deposition coatings - Part 4 specifies laboratory test methods to assess the compatibility of electro-deposition coating materials with liquid, paste-like and solid foreign materials. Published by CEN and identical to ISO 22553-4:2019, this standard defines three contamination procedures and evaluation criteria to detect coating defects caused by downstream process contaminants.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to electro-deposition (e-coat) systems used in the automotive sector and general industrial applications (chillers, radiators, consumer products, aerospace, agriculture).
- Three test methods
- Method A - Direct contamination: Add liquid, paste-like or solid foreign materials directly to the e-coating bath, then coat test panels.
- Method B - Contact contamination: Contaminate the test panel surface with solid material, then immerse and coat in the e-coat bath.
- Method C - Contamination during stoving: Apply paste-like or solid foreign material to a base panel; place a coated test panel at a specified gap and stove (bake); evaluate post-stove effects.
- Evaluation
- Visual inspection for surface defects and coating integrity after coating/stoving.
- Test essentials and references
- Requires a laboratory deposition system, standardized test panels and controlled reagents. Normative references include ISO 1514, ISO 2808, ISO 4618, ISO 22553-1 and ISO 23321.
- Reporting and precision
- The standard defines the required test report content and includes information on precision of the methods.
Applications
- Quality assurance and R&D for electro-deposition coatings and paint formulators.
- Process qualification and troubleshooting for OEMs and tier suppliers in the automotive industry and other manufacturing sectors using e-coat lines.
- Evaluating risks from downstream contaminants (oils, adhesives, insulating materials, prelubes) that can pass through an e-coat tank and compromise finish performance.
- Useful for laboratories performing contamination compatibility testing and for procurement/specification writers who need objective acceptance criteria.
Who should use this standard
- Coating formulators and suppliers, automotive OEM quality engineers, process engineers, independent testing labs, standardization committees and any organization specifying or validating electro-deposition finishes.
Related Standards
- ISO 22553 series (Part 1: Vocabulary; Part 3: reference oil tests)
- ISO 1514, ISO 2808, ISO 4618, ISO 23321 - referenced normative documents for panels, film thickness, terminology and demineralized water.
EN ISO 22553-4:2020 is a practical test standard for detecting e-coat vulnerability to realistic production contaminants, helping stakeholders reduce coating defects and improve corrosion and appearance reliability.

Introduction
During the electro-deposition coating process, foreign materials used in downstream production
processes pass through the electro-deposition coating tank. Consequently, contamination of the
electro-deposition coating tank material or defects in the surface of the coating can occur. Foreign
materials can be, for example, oils, adhesives, insulating material and plastic building components.
