Overview

EN 13219:2008 - Gymnastic equipment: Trampolines - Functional and safety requirements, test methods (CEN) defines functional and specific safety requirements and test methods for five types of gymnastic trampolines intended for supervised use. It complements the general safety requirements in EN 913:2008 and covers classification, dimensions, materials, bed markings, padding, structural strength, elastic behaviour and required test procedures. The standard excludes tumble/fast tracks, home trampolines, safety harnesses and accessories.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and classification
    • Applies to five trampoline types (standard trampolines, closed/open mini‑trampolines, double mini and pit trampolines) with dimensions and sizes specified in Tables 2–6 and Figures 6–10.
  • Materials
    • Frames and transport/storage devices: steel or aluminium alloy; steel must be corrosion‑protected (hot‑galvanized, powder coated or painted).
    • Beds: manufactured from synthetic fibres.
  • Bed and markings
    • Bed web/string spacing ≤ 16 mm to prevent entrapment.
    • Centre marks/jumping zones required (detailed sizes given for Type 1, Type 2–5 and double mini configurations).
  • Stability and antislip
    • Types 1–4 must not tip, tilt or slide when a horizontal force equal to 50% of the trampoline’s own weight is applied (test method 5.2).
  • Strength and elastic properties
    • Structural components must show no fracture or hazardous permanent deformation under specified static loads (test method 5.3).
    • Test forces: e.g., Types 1 & 5 - 4 650 N; Types 2, 3 & 4 - 3 500 N (see Table 7).
    • Indentation during test must not exceed 80% of bed height; bed must return to initial position.
  • Padding and shock absorption
    • Suspension frame and suspension system must be padded; peak acceleration under impact testing must not exceed 500 m/s². Padding must be contrasting in colour and securely attached.
  • Storage and transport
    • Types 1 and 4 require a demountable transport/storage device that does not obstruct the frame or free space under the bed.

Applications and who uses this standard

EN 13219:2008 is used by:

  • Trampoline manufacturers and designers for product compliance and design verification
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing safety and performance tests
  • Sports facility managers, gymnastics clubs and equipment purchasers specifying safe, competition‑grade equipment
  • Certification bodies and national standardization organizations for harmonized European requirements

The standard is especially relevant where trampolines are used under qualified supervision (gymnastics training, competition, and sports centres).
