EN 14666:2005 - Overview
EN 14666:2005 is a CEN European Standard that specifies a gas chromatographic method for the determination of tetraacetyl ethylene diamine (TAED) content in TAED granules where the TAED content is ≥ 25 g/100 g. Designed for laboratories performing quality control and compliance testing of surface active agents, the standard defines sampling, sample preparation, calibration, analysis by gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection (GC‑FID), result calculation and reporting.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Quantitative determination of TAED in granules (≥ 25 g/100 g).
- Principle: Dissolve ground granules in acetonitrile, add an internal standard (stearic acid methyl ester), inject into a GC with FID, and calculate TAED concentration from peak areas and a previously determined response factor.
- Reagents: Analytical‑grade acetonitrile, stearic acid methyl ester (internal standard), certified TAED reference material.
- Apparatus: GC with split/splitless injector, FID, integrator/computer and a fused‑silica capillary column (e.g. 25 m × 0.25 mm, 0.25 µm PDMS stationary phase suggested).
- Calibration: Multi‑point calibration (25, 50, 75, 100 mg TAED in internal standard solution) with linear regression of peak area ratios to mass ratios to determine the response factor.
- Procedure: Homogenize sample per ISO 607, dissolve weighed sample with internal standard, stir, filter if necessary, then analyze by GC.
- Calculation: TAED content is calculated from the sample peak areas, internal standard mass and response factor.
- Precision: Repeatability and reproducibility data provided from an inter‑laboratory study (Annex B); typical repeatability limit r ≈ 0.85 g/100 g and reproducibility limit R ≈ 1.27 g/100 g for the tested material.
- Annex A: Example GC chromatogram and suggested operating conditions (carrier gas H2/He, injector ~250 °C, detector ~300 °C, injection ~1.5 µL, temperature program example included).
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Industrial quality control laboratories, detergent and textile care product manufacturers, raw material suppliers, independent testing laboratories and regulatory bodies.
- Why it’s used:
- Verify TAED purity and concentration in granules for formulation accuracy.
- Ensure batch‑to‑batch consistency and compliance with product specifications.
- Support R&D and stability testing of bleaching activators in detergents.
- Provide traceable test reports for regulatory or commercial purposes.
