Overview

SIST EN ISO 8130-11:2019 is a European and International Standard developed by CEN and ISO Technical Committees for testing coating powders. It specifies a comparative method to determine the flow characteristics of fused thermosetting coating powders as they move down an inclined plane at a set angle. This test provides an indication of the degree of melt flow during curing of the powder coating, which plays a crucial role in the surface appearance and coverage over sharp edges of coated materials.

This standard is essential for quality control, enabling manufacturers to monitor batch-to-batch variation in powder flow behavior. It is not applicable for powders with gel times under 1 minute at test temperature or for textured powders.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose

    • Measures melt flow of thermosetting coating powders on an inclined heated plane
    • Helps assess surface finish quality and edge coverage during curing
    • Comparative method intended to identify batch variations
  • Test Principle

    • A pellet of the coating powder is formed and pressed into a standard size
    • Pellet is heated on an inclined plate, and the flow distance over a fixed time is measured
  • Test Conditions

    • Inclination angle fixed at (65 ± 1)° to horizontal
    • Temperature typically (180 ± 2) °C or recommended curing temperature
    • Duration: pellet flows for 15 minutes before measuring flow length
  • Apparatus Requirements

    • Fan-assisted air circulation oven capable up to 250 °C
    • Rigid glass or metal plates with defined thickness and surface finish
    • Pellet mounding press to form test samples (12.5 mm diameter, 6.5 mm thick)
    • Precision balance, graduated ruler, and plate assembly for heating
  • Testing Procedure

    • Weigh approximately 0.5–0.75 g of powder
    • Compress to form pellet, place on preheated plate in oven
    • Flow test performed with oven door briefly opened twice for positioning
    • Measure melt flow length after cooling to determine flow characteristics
  • Applicability Limitations

    • Not suitable for powders with gel time less than 1 minute (ISO 8130-6)
    • Not applicable for textured coating powders
    • Results are comparative and valid only when testing the same powder under consistent conditions

Applications

SIST EN ISO 8130-11:2019 serves coating powder manufacturers, quality assurance labs, and coatings formulators that need reliable, repeatable flow characteristic data for fused thermosetting powders. Applications include:

  • Quality control of coating powders to ensure consistent melt flow properties batch-to-batch
  • Product development and testing for new powder coating formulations
  • Surface finish evaluation related to flow behavior influencing coverage of edges and uniformity
  • Comparative testing to monitor and optimize cure parameters in production environments
  • Regulatory and compliance documentation referencing ISO standards for coating powders

This method helps prevent defects related to insufficient or excessive flow during curing, such as poor edge coverage, runs, or texture anomalies, making it valuable in automotive, industrial, and architectural powder coating industries.

Related Standards

To complement SIST EN ISO 8130-11:2019, relevant standards include:

  • ISO 8130-6: Determination of gel time of thermosetting coating powders - important to ensure test suitability
