Overview
SIST EN 12390-1:2021 is a comprehensive European standard published by CEN that specifies the shape, dimensions, and tolerances for hardened concrete test specimens and their moulds. This document is critical in ensuring reliable and repeatable testing results for concrete by standardizing the physical parameters of test specimens such as cubes, cylinders, and prisms, as well as the moulds used to produce them.
The standard replaces the earlier EN 12390-1:2012 and includes updated tolerances that align with current industry practices. It facilitates conformity in strength testing and other property assessments of hardened concrete, providing clear guidelines for specimen preparation.
Key Topics
Specimen Types
- Cubes: Nominal sizes range between 100 mm and 300 mm, with declared sizes allowed within ±10% of nominal.
- Cylinders: Diameters range from 100 mm to 300 mm, height typically twice the diameter.
- Prisms: Widths from 70 mm to 300 mm, with lengths at least twice the width.
Dimensional Tolerances
- Flatness, perpendicularity, and straightness tolerances are rigorously defined, for example:
- Cube face flatness tolerance: 0.0006 × designated size.
- Cylinder diameter tolerance: ±1%.
- Prisms require perpendicularity within 0.5 mm relative to the base.
- Flatness, perpendicularity, and straightness tolerances are rigorously defined, for example:
Measurement Procedures
- Specimens must be measured unless produced in calibrated moulds.
- Certified calibrated moulds follow stricter tolerances, allowing reduced specimen measurement needs.
Mould Requirements
- Moulds must be watertight, non-absorbent, and robust enough to prevent distortion.
- Calibrated moulds are typically made from steel or cast iron.
- Flatness and perpendicularity tolerances are specified for mould surfaces, aiding accurate specimen formation.
Conformance with Geometrical Standards
- References EN ISO 1101 for geometrical product specifications, emphasizing flatness, perpendicularity, and straightness.
- Annexes provide detailed methods for assessing flatness and applying tolerance requirements.
Applications
Concrete Material Testing
- Ensuring standardized specimen dimensions improves accuracy and repeatability of compressive strength tests, flexural strength tests, tensile splitting strength tests, and other property evaluations.
Quality Control in Construction
- Concrete producers and testing labs use this standard to verify specimen conformity, assuring the quality and performance of concrete batches used in structural engineering projects.
Research & Development
- Laboratories developing new concrete formulations rely on these tolerances and specimen specifications to validate mechanical properties under controlled conditions.
Calibrated Mould Manufacturing
- Mold manufacturers design products meeting EN 12390-1 standards to support concrete testing labs in producing compliant specimens.
Related Standards
- EN 206: Standard for concrete specification, performance, production, and conformity, closely linked as it defines aggregate sizes and material requirements that influence specimen sizing under EN 12390-1.
- EN ISO 1101: Provides geometrical tolerancing principles, applied within EN 12390-1 for precise shape and dimension control.
- Other parts of EN 12390 Series:
- Part 2: Making and curing specimens
- Part 3: Compressive strength testing
- Part 5: Flexural strength of test specimens
- Part 6: Tensile splitting strength tests
- Part 7: Density of hardened concrete
Conclusion
SIST EN 12390-1:2021 plays a crucial role in the standardized testing of hardened concrete by defining the physical characteristics and tolerances for standard test specimens and moulds. Adhering to this standard ensures consistency, reliability, and comparability of concrete strength and property tests across laboratories and industries. This document (EN 12390-1:2021) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 104 “Concrete
and related products”, the secretariat of which is held by SN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by January 2022, and conflicting national standards shall
be withdrawn at the latest by January 2022.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CEN shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
This document supersedes EN 12390-1:2012.
The following amendments have been made to the former edition:
— editorial revision;
— increases in the allowable tolerances for flatness of moulds and the dimensions of the specimens
which reflect current industry practice.
This document is one of a series on testing concrete.
EN 12390, Testing hardened concrete, consists of the following parts:
— Part 1: Shape, dimensions and other requirements for specimens and moulds;
— Part 2: Making and curing specimens for strength tests;
— Part 3: Compressive strength of test specimens;
— Part 4: Compressive strength – Specification for testing machines;
— Part 5: Flexural strength of test specimens;
— Part 6: Tensile splitting strength of test specimens;
— Part 7: Density of hardened concrete;
— Part 8: Depth of penetration of water under pressure;
— Part 10: Determination of the carbonation resistance of concrete at atmospheric levels of carbon
dioxide;

— Part 14: Semi-adiabatic method for the determination of heat released by concrete during its hardening
process;
— Part 15: Adiabatic method for the determination of heat released by concrete during its hardening
process;
— Part 16: Determination of shrinkage of concrete;
— Part 17: Determination of creep of concrete in compression;
— Part 18: Determination of the chloride migration coefficient (in preparation).
This document recognizes alternative approaches towards obtaining test specimens of the correct sizes
and shapes. The first is to use moulds whose lives are limited and to measure the specimens to ensure
conformity. The second is to cast specimens in calibrated metal moulds which meet tighter tolerances
than for specimens. The use of calibrated moulds allows relaxation on the requirement for measuring the
specimens.
Annex A gives the application of EN ISO 1101 to measuring the shapes of concrete test specimens and
moulds.
Annex B gives a method to measure the flatness of specimens and moulds.
