SIST EN 13997:2004 is the Slovenian standard identical to EN 13997:2003, published by SIST. It specifies the technical characteristics, requirements and test methods for hydraulic connection and control accessories used in irrigation systems, so manufacturers and test laboratories can verify mechanical resistance, corrosion protection, dimensions, coupling behavior and pressure performance. The standard applies to accessories made of steel, brass, aluminium, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) or polyvinylchloride (PVC) for irrigation systems up to 250 mm diameter.
What does SIST EN 13997:2004 specify?
SIST EN 13997:2004 specifies requirements for connection and control accessories used in irrigation systems and the tests used to check them. Clause 1 limits the scope to accessories for systems up to 250 mm diameter, which makes the document relevant for pipe fittings, valves, hydrants, meters and similar irrigation hardware.
The document is organized into scope, normative references, terms and definitions, technical characteristics and requirements, marking, and testing, followed by two informative annexes.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Application for test of connection and control accessories, Form 1 |
| Annex B | Results of test of connection and control accessories, Form 2 |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 13997:2004?
Materials, production and corrosion resistance
Clause 4.1 ties the permitted production method to the material: steel, brass and aluminium alloy parts may be welded or moulded, while PP, PE and PVC parts are extruded. In practice, this tells a manufacturer what manufacturing routes fit the material family.
Clause 4.2 requires the accessories to resist corrosion in service. Steel plate parts are to be hot dip zinc galvanized to EN 10240, moulded steel parts are to be galvanized or coated with anticorrosion paint, and aluminium alloy parts are to meet the referenced aluminium standards. Brass parts are suitable for irrigation water without abrasive or chemical components, and the manufacturer is responsible for approving use with fertilizer or plant-protection solutions.
Dimensions, surface finish and coupling behavior
Clause 4.3 distinguishes between nominal length (lN), overall length (lO), width, height and diameter, and it treats quick-coupling parts separately from the rest of the accessory. That matters because buyers and installers need a declared measuring basis when checking fit and interchangeability.
Clause 4.4 requires a smooth internal surface, with only limited protrusion from welding residue or flashes. Clause 4.5 then defines the usual coupling types and requires watertight joints under nominal pressure, air-tight behavior where quick-coupling pipelines are used as suction lines, and 2000 opening-and-closing cycles. The manufacturer must also declare the maximum bending angle of adjacent elements.
Pressure performance and marking
Clause 4.6 requires spherical-coupling parts to be replaceable in the middle of a 100 m pipeline without shifting the whole line longitudinally. Clause 4.7 says operating pressure must not exceed the declared nominal pressure (PN), and selection should take pressure shocks into account. Clause 4.8 requires the manufacturer to declare head loss at nominal pressure or nominal flow rate.
Clause 5 allows marking with the producer name or sign together with length, diameter and nominal pressure. That helps traceability at delivery and during field inspection.
Testing and reporting
Clause 6 uses two test forms from Annexes A and B and a defined set of specimens and documents. The tests cover dimensions, wall thickness, length, bending angle, replacement in a 100 m line, pressure loss, behavior at nominal pressure, behavior up to 1.5 times nominal pressure, burst resistance and bulging.
The test method relies on calibrated pressure gauges, a calibrated flow meter, controlled water conditions and specified test layouts in Figures 5 to 7. In practice, this means a lab must document the test setup clearly enough for repeatable results and compare the specimen against the declared data.
What terms does SIST EN 13997:2004 define?
- Connection accessory for irrigation - A portable device with coupling parts that gives a safe connection to another part or pipe of the same kind.
- Quick coupling accessory - A connection accessory that can be connected and released in a few seconds, usually without a tool.
- Moulded part - A moulded, welded or formed part used to connect parts of an irrigation plant in a straight or modified direction.
- Control accessory - A part that influences water pressure or flow direction, or provides data for operating the irrigation plant.
- Nominal length (lN) - The declared length measured after coupling two identical parts between matching reference points.
- Overall length (lO) - The total length of a part including coupling parts.
- Nominal pressure (PN) - The declared pressure rating of the part, which operating pressure must not exceed.
Who uses SIST EN 13997:2004?
SIST EN 13997:2004 is used by manufacturers and suppliers of irrigation connection and control accessories, by test laboratories that carry out product verification, and by quality managers who need a testable specification. It is also useful for designers, installers and buyers in the irrigation and drainage equipment sector when they need to check material suitability, pressure rating, corrosion protection and fit with existing pipework.
What changed in SIST EN 13997:2004 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 13997:2004 is identical to EN 13997:2003.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 13997:2004?
| Referenced standard | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| EN 10240 | Hot dip galvanized coatings for steel parts |
| ISO 209-1 | Chemical composition for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys |
| ISO 209-2 | Forms of products for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys |
| ISO 3522 | Chemical composition and mechanical properties for cast aluminium alloys |
| ISO 11678 | Requirements for aluminium irrigation tubes |
| ISO/DIS 15081 | Graphic symbols for pressurized irrigation systems, listed in the bibliography |
What does the SIST EN 13997:2004 document contain?
The standard contains tables that link materials to production methods, list the parts and documents needed for testing, and record measured test results. It also includes figures for connection accessories, control accessories, length marking and test arrangements for pressure, bending and bulging.
Clause 6 lays out test procedures for pressure loss, nominal pressure behavior, burst resistance and deformation checks. Annex A and Annex B provide the forms used to apply for a test and to record the results, which makes the standard practical for laboratories and conformity assessment work.
