Overview
EN 13630-10:2025 (CEN) - "Explosives for civil uses - Detonating cords and safety fuses - Part 10" specifies a standardized laboratory method to determine the index of initiating capability of detonating cords. The method quantifies how effectively a detonating cord will initiate nearby charges by counting and measuring how many paper cards a detonation severs. This Part 10 applies only to detonating cords (not safety fuses) and is intended specifically to assess the initiation index; reliability of initiation is covered separately in EN 13630-7:2025. EN 13630-10:2025 supersedes EN 13630-10:2005 and includes updated apparatus, sample preparation, procedure and reporting requirements.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: Determination of the index by counting completely and partially cut paper cards in a stack after detonation.
- Test samples: Five test pieces per sample, each (500 ± 50) mm long; both ends sealed to prevent leakage and moisture ingress; conditioned prior to testing.
- Paper cards: Wood-free uncoated paper (WFU/UWF), grammage 250 g/m², card size (100 ± 5) mm × (50 ± 5) mm.
- Conditioning: Test pieces and paper cards conditioned at (23 ± 5) °C and (50 ± 10) % RH for at least 8 h (conditioning chamber required).
- Apparatus: Detonator per EN 13630-1:2025, support plate (steel/aluminium), adhesive tape, length gauge, sealing means, thermometer and hygrometer.
- Procedure highlights:
- Stack cards tightly on support plate; fix detonating cord centrally with tape and provide a 50 ± 10 mm excess.
- Initiate via specified detonator; collect uncut and partially cut cards without extending cuts.
- Measure projection of cut along the 100 mm centre line for partially cut cards to obtain fractional values (0–1).
- Compute equivalent number of cut cards (completely cut + sum of fractions), repeat for all five test pieces.
- Index I = arithmetic mean of five results, rounded to nearest decimal; if >50 (possible when 55 cards used) express as “> 50”.
- Test report: Must reference EN 13630-10:2025 and include detonating cord ID, environmental conditions, paper identification, individual run data and final index.
