Overview
EN 60622:2003 (CLC) covers sealed nickel–cadmium prismatic rechargeable single cells - cells with alkaline or other non‑acid electrolytes. Adopted from IEC 60622:2002, the standard specifies marking, dimensional requirements, test procedures and performance limits for sealed Ni‑Cd prismatic cells used in industrial and consumer battery assemblies. It is intended to ensure consistent safety, performance and interchangeability for prismatic Ni‑Cd single cells.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions - Applies to sealed prismatic Ni‑Cd single cells (nominal voltage 1.2 V) and defines terms such as “sealed cell”, rated capacity and test conditions.
- Designation and marking - Cells are designated “KC” plus a letter (L, M, H, X) indicating discharge‑rate category (low to very high) followed by figures for rated capacity (example: KCH15). Minimum marking includes type, manufacturer ID and identification of the positive terminal.
- Dimensions and tolerances - Preferred prismatic dimensions and measurement tolerances are provided for width, length and height; negative tolerances for widths/lengths are specified.
- Instrumentation tolerances - Measurement accuracy requirements: ±1% for voltage and current, ±2°C for temperature, ±0.1% for time, and ±1% for capacity.
- Electrical tests - Detailed test sequences and procedures including:
- Charging procedure for test purposes (pre‑discharge at 0.2·It to 1.0 V, then charge at 0.1·It for 14–16 h at 20°C ±5°C).
- Discharge performance at 20°C, +5°C and −18°C; high‑rate current test.
- Charge retention, cycle endurance, permanent charge endurance, charge acceptance at constant voltage, overcharge behaviour.
- Safety device operation, gas leakage and storage tests.
- Mechanical and physical tests - Requirements for mechanical resistance and physical appearance checks.
- Approval and acceptance - Procedures for type approval and batch acceptance are specified.
Applications and users
EN 60622:2003 is directly relevant to:
- Battery manufacturers designing and producing sealed Ni‑Cd prismatic cells.
- Test laboratories and quality assurance teams performing certification and batch acceptance testing.
- Product designers and system integrators specifying cells for portable equipment, emergency lighting, telecom backup and industrial applications.
- Regulatory and procurement teams requiring compliance evidence for safety and performance.
Using EN 60622 helps organizations ensure reliable charge/discharge performance, safe operation (including safety device requirements) and consistent dimensional interchangeability of prismatic Ni‑Cd cells.
