SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003 is the Slovenian standard adopted by SIST from ETS 300 154 Edition 1. It specifies terminal characteristics for telematic file transfer within the Teletex service, and the same telematic protocol also applies to facsimile Group 4 equipment. The document is for terminal equipment (TE) designers, implementers, and test teams that need to support this file-transfer function.

What does SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003 specify?

SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003 specifies the technical description needed to implement the functionalities for telematic file transfer. Its scope says the aim is to allow transmission of data files with or without additional information about the file being sent.

The document is organized around the scope, normative references, transfer modes, protocol aspects, and capability negotiation. The foreword also links it to related Teletex and facsimile Group 4 standards that are often used together with it.

What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003?

  • Clause 1, Scope - SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003 defines telematic file transfer as a means of sending files with or without added file information. In practice, implementers need to support file transport itself, not only document-like payloads.
  • Subclause 3.1, Basic Transfer Mode (BTM) - The standard says BTM lets a user exchange files of any kind, including binary files, word-processor native format documents, and bitmaps, without additional information. For equipment design, this means the transport has to handle mixed file types, not just text.
  • Subclause 3.2, Document Transfer Mode (DTM) - In the Teletex and facsimile Group 4 environment, DTM is merged into BTM. That matters because implementers in these environments treat document transfer as part of the basic file-transfer capability rather than as a separate mode.
  • Clause 5.2, Protocol aspects - Telematic file transfer for Teletex and Group 4 facsimile equipment is based on the CCITT Recommendation T.62 session. This gives the session-level basis for interoperability and shows which protocol layer the equipment has to support.
  • Clause 5.2, negotiation - Teletex or Group 4 facsimile equipment may negotiate one or more of the listed features using the same mechanism as private mode negotiation, through CDCL or RDCLP. In practice, terminals need to exchange capability data before the transfer proceeds.
  • Subclause 9.1.1, parameters used in CDCL/RDCLP - The parameters described there allow capability negotiation between Teletex and/or facsimile Group 4 equipment. This is the part that implementers and test labs use to verify that both ends agree on the supported features.
  • ETSI common modifications - The standard also amends the wording of the original ITU-T text in the scope, BTM, DTM, protocol aspects, and capability-parameter description. That tells readers exactly where the European version adapts the base recommendation.

What terms does SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003 define?

  • Terminal Equipment (TE) - The user equipment covered by the standard.
  • Teletex - The telematic service for which file-transfer terminal characteristics are defined.
  • Facsimile Group 4 - The fax environment that uses the same telematic protocol in this standard.
  • Basic Transfer Mode (BTM) - The mode for exchanging files of any kind without extra information.
  • Document Transfer Mode (DTM) - The document-oriented mode that is merged into BTM in this environment.
  • Command Document Capability List (CDCL) - The command used to negotiate supported capabilities.
  • Response Document Capability List Positive (RDCLP) - The positive response used in the same capability negotiation.

Who uses SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003?

This standard is used by manufacturers and developers of Teletex and facsimile Group 4 terminal equipment. It is also used by test engineers, conformity assessment teams, and quality managers who need to check that a terminal can negotiate capabilities and carry telematic files correctly.

It is relevant in telecommunications engineering, terminal interoperability testing, and product acceptance for equipment that supports file transfer over Teletex or Group 4 facsimile services.

What changed in SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003 from the previous edition?

SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003 presents the ETSI common modifications to ITU-T Recommendation T.571. The changes named in the document are a revised scope, an added normative reference to CCITT Recommendation F.184, revised wording for Basic Transfer Mode and Document Transfer Mode, updated protocol wording tied to CCITT Recommendation T.62 and CDCL/RDCLP, and revised parameter wording in subclause 9.1.1.

Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003?

StandardWhat it contributes
ITU-T Recommendation T.571Base recommendation for terminal characteristics for telematic file transfer within the Teletex service
CCITT Recommendation F.551Service requirements for the telematic services referred to in the scope
CCITT Recommendation F.184Operational provisions for international facsimile service between subscriber stations with group 4 machines
ETS 300 015Basic and recommended additional requirements for terminal equipment supporting Teletex application
ETS 300 017Test procedures for Teletex
ETS 300 081Teletex end-to-end protocol over ISDN
ETS 300 087Functional specification of facsimile group 4 class 1 equipment on ISDN
ETS 300 112End-to-end protocols for facsimile group 4 class 1 equipment on ISDN
ETS 300 155End-to-end protocol tests for interconnection capability testing
ETS 300 280Terminal testing for facsimile group 4 class 1 equipment on ISDN
ETR 052Service intercommunication requirements for Teletex terminal equipment

What does the SIST ETS 300 154 E1:2003 document contain?

The document contains the scope, normative references, the description of BTM and DTM, protocol aspects, and capability-parameter wording for CDCL/RDCLP negotiation. It also contains a figure in subclause 9.1.1 that supports the capability-negotiation parameters.

For readers doing implementation or testing, the most useful parts are the transfer-mode definitions and the protocol negotiation text. The foreword and endorsement notice explain how the ETS relates to ITU-T Recommendation T.571 and to the related Teletex and facsimile Group 4 standards used alongside it.

Foreword
This European Telecommunication Standard (ETS) has been produced by the Terminal Equipment (TE)
Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
ITU-T Recommendation T.571 [1] ("Terminal characteristics for the telematic file transfer within the
Teletex service") indicates the telematic file transfer for facsimile Group A as for further study. Within the
ETSI environment, the use of this ETS also applies to the facsimile Group 4 service, since the telematic
protocol used for the telematic file transfer is identical for Teletex and the facsimile Group 4 service.
Since the telematic file transfer is used in the scope of ITU-T Recommendation T.571 [1], all ETSs
relevant to the telematic services, Teletex and facsimile Group 4, may be considered in conjunction with
this ETS. These include:
ETS 300 015 "Terminal Equipment (TE); Basic and recommended additional requirements for
terminal equipment supporting Teletex application".
ETS 300 017 "Terminal Equipment (TE); Test procedures for Teletex".
ETS 300 081 "Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN); Teletex end-to-end protocol over the
ISDN".
ETS 300 087 "Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN); Facsimile group 4 class 1 equipment on
the ISDN, Functional specification of the equipment".
ETS 300 112 "Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN); Facsimile group 4 class 1 equipment on
the ISDN, End-to-end protocols".
ETS 300 155 "Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN); Facsimile group 4 class 1 equipment on
the ISDN, End-to-end protocol tests (Interconnection capability testing)".
