Overview

SIST EN ISO 24157:2008/A1:2020 is an important amendment to the European and international standard for ophthalmic optics and instruments, specifically addressing the reporting of aberrations in the human eye. This amendment, developed under ISO/TC 172 and CEN/TC 170 Committees, updates the original 2008 standard with refined definitions and mathematical representations to enhance precision in how eye aberrations are characterized and documented.

Aberrations-optical imperfections that affect image quality on the retina-are critical to understanding visual performance and designing corrective lenses and ophthalmic instruments. This standard amendment ensures consistent reporting terminology and calculation methods utilized by eye care professionals, researchers, and manufacturers worldwide.

Key Topics

  • Line of Sight Definition Update
The amendment refines the definition of "line of sight," describing it as the ray path from a point of interest in object space through the eye's entrance pupil, extending to the retinal point of fixation (commonly the foveola). This precise definition clarifies the segments involved in visual ray paths essential for aberration analysis.

  • Incorporation of Sample Points in Analysis
The introduction of a new metric, represented as N - the number of sample points, facilitates standardized data sampling in aberration measurements, improving repeatability and data interpretation.

  • Revised Mathematical Representations
Table E.1 includes updated Zernike polynomial coefficients for higher order aberrations, providing more accurate calculation formulas in terms of radial (ρ) and angular (θ) components and Cartesian coordinates (x, y). These polynomials model complex wavefront deformations, crucial for precise optical diagnostics.

  • Harmonization of Terminology
The amendment aligns key terms with related ISO standards, including ISO 13666:2019, ensuring consistency across ophthalmic optics literature and regulatory documents.

Applications

  • Ophthalmic Instrument Calibration
Manufacturers of wavefront aberrometers, corneal topographers, and other diagnostic devices use this standard to ensure their instruments correctly interpret and report eye aberration data in a uniform manner.

  • Custom Vision Correction
Clinicians rely on accurate aberration reporting when designing customized contact lenses, intraocular lenses (IOLs), and refractive surgery plans to optimize visual outcomes by correcting higher-order aberrations.

  • Research and Development
Academia and industry researchers benefit from standardized aberration descriptors when conducting clinical studies, improving device algorithms, or developing novel optical materials.

  • Regulatory Compliance
National standards bodies and regulatory agencies adopt this amendment to harmonize technical requirements for ophthalmic optics products, facilitating market approvals and quality assurance.

Related Standards

  • ISO 13666:2019: Defines terminology related to the optics and photonics of the human eye including "line of sight," ensuring conceptual alignment.

  • EN ISO 24157:2008: The original standard prior to the 2020 amendment, foundational for reporting eye aberrations.

  • ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2: Guides editorial principles for standards development, referenced for document preparation.

  • Standards on Ophthalmic Instruments (CEN/TC 170): Broader standards covering design and performance of vision-related equipment.
