Bitumen and bituminous binders - Determination of cohesion of bituminous binders with pendulum test

This European Standard specifies a method for measuring the cohesion of bituminous binders for surface dressing application at temperatures in the range of (- 10 oC) to (+ 80 °C) and for expressing the relationship between cohesion and temperature.
This method is applicable for pure bitumen, modified bitumen and fluxed bitumen; in the case of fluxed bitumen, the test can be performed on the binder containing fluxant or on binder from which the solvent has been removed. For bitumen emulsions, the test is carried out on the residual binder obtained after recovery and the method used to recover the binder should be reported.
WARNING - The use of this European Standard may involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This European Standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this European Standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Bitumen in bitumenska veziva - Določanje kohezijskih lastnosti bitumenskih veziv s preskusom z nihalom

Overview

EN 13588:2017 - Bitumen and bituminous binders: Determination of cohesion of bituminous binders with pendulum test (CEN) defines a laboratory method to measure the cohesion of bituminous binders and to express how cohesion varies with temperature. The published standard specifies testing to typically cover the temperature window around service conditions (the standard indicates tests are normally performed between +10 °C and +70 °C) and is applicable to pure bitumen, polymer‑modified binders, fluxed bitumen (either with or without fluxant removed) and the residual binder recovered from emulsions. The method enables determination of the cohesion peak and, optionally, a full cohesion vs temperature curve for quality control, specification and material selection.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: A 10 mm steel cube is bonded to a serrated steel support by a 1 mm film of binder. A calibrated pendulum impacts the cube and the energy absorbed to detach the cube is calculated from the pendulum swing - reported as cohesion (J/cm²).
  • Outputs and curve parameters: Maximum cohesion (Cm) and its temperature (Tm); optional low/high end temperatures (Tlow, Thigh) corresponding to a limit cohesion value (CL); cohesion vs temperature curve.
  • Apparatus essentials:
    • Cohesion tester with adjustable pendulum and protective cage.
    • Pendulum mass and geometry defined (pendulum mass ≈ 1 925 g; specified radii/height tolerances).
    • Steel serrated cubes and supports; minimum repeatability requirements (typically six assemblies per temperature).
  • Sample types: Pure bitumen, modified bitumen, fluxed binders (with or without solvent removal) and binders recovered from emulsions (method of recovery must be reported).
  • Testing practice: Preparation of cubes, controlled thermal history, storage of assemblies, temperature selection and multiple repetitions to establish valid results.
  • Safety: The standard includes a warning that hazardous materials and equipment may be involved - laboratories must apply safe working practices.

Applications and users

  • Pavement engineers and road authorities selecting binders for surface dressing and thin overlays.
  • Bitumen and modifier manufacturers validating product performance across temperature ranges.
  • Independent testing laboratories performing binder characterization and quality control.
  • Researchers studying temperature‑dependent cohesion, ageing effects and modifier performance.

Related standards

  • EN 58 - Sampling bituminous binders
  • EN 1427 - Determination of the softening point (Ring and Ball)
  • EN 12594 - Preparation of test samples

EN 13588:2017 is a practical, repeatable pendulum‑test method widely used for binder selection, specification compliance and comparative performance testing in pavement engineering and surface‑dressing applications.
