Overview
EN 16622:2015 - Silica‑calcium fume for concrete - Definitions, requirements and conformity criteria - is a CEN European Standard that defines the characteristics, testing and conformity rules for silica‑calcium fume (SCF). SCF is a densified by‑product collected from filters during the carbothermal production of silica‑calcium alloys. The standard sets chemical and physical requirements for SCF when used as a Type II addition in concrete (EN 206), mortars, grouts and similar mixes, and defines assessment and verification procedures for conformity (AVCP). It does not prescribe mix design or application rules for concrete (see EN 206 for usage principles).
Key topics and requirements
- Material definition: SCF is very fine particles of amorphous silicon dioxide and dicalcium silicate, typically supplied in a densified form.
- Chemical requirements: Specifies which chemical parameters must be measured and controlled, including:
- Silicon dioxide (SiO2) and elemental silicon
- Total calcium oxide (CaO) and free CaO
- Sulfate, chloride, alkalis and loss on ignition (LOI)
- Physical requirements: Addresses physical properties such as:
- Specific surface area (e.g., BET method referenced)
- Activity index (pozzolanic/hydraulic performance in mortar strength tests)
- Particle density
- Conformity and quality control:
- Type testing, sampling plans and statistical compliance criteria
- Factory production control (FPC) requirements, initial inspection and ongoing surveillance
- Testing laboratory and test‑reporting procedures
- Single result and specified characteristic value concepts for acceptance
- Health, hygiene and environment: Includes provisions on release of dangerous substances and radioactivity emissions.
- Regulatory link: Annex ZA maps relevant clauses to the EU Construction Products Regulation (DoP, CE marking, AVCP).
Applications and practical value
- Use SCF as a Type II mineral addition to improve durability, rheology and hardened properties of concrete and mortars.
- Helps manufacturers and specifiers ensure SCF product quality, traceability and regulatory compliance.
- Enables consistent test methods and acceptance criteria for procurement, certification and quality assurance.
- Useful for blend design, production control, depot handling and supplier declarations (DoP/CE).
Who should use this standard
- Concrete and mortar producers, cement and SCM suppliers
- Admixture and construction materials manufacturers
- Testing laboratories and inspection bodies
- Specifiers, structural and materials engineers, and public procurement teams
- National standards bodies implementing EN 206 and construction product regulations
