Overview
SIST EN 300 019-2-6 V3.0.0:2006 is a Slovenian-adopted European standard developed by SIST and ETSI, focusing on environmental engineering for telecommunications equipment. It specifies environmental test requirements for verifying the resilience and functionality of telecommunications equipment intended for installation on ships. This standard addresses different shipboard environmental conditions-such as temperature fluctuations, humidity, chemical exposure, and mechanical stress-which telecommunications equipment may encounter whether permanently or temporarily installed.
The standard aligns with EN 300 019-1-6 and forms part of a wider suite that covers classification and testing of telecommunication hardware in varied operational environments.
Key Topics
- Environmental Classes: Covers equipment in totally weatherprotected, partly weatherprotected, and non-weatherprotected shipboard locations.
- Test Methods and Severities: Details prescribed test methods to simulate the harsh maritime environmental factors, referencing IEC 60068-2 series for recognized procedures.
- Verification of Resistibility: Outlines procedures for determining if telecom equipment can operate reliably before, during, and after exposure to shipboard environmental stresses.
- Mechanical and Climatic Factors:
- Temperature extremes and rapid temperature changes
- High humidity and damp heat conditions
- Vibration, shocks, and sustained motion
- Exposure to salt mist, UV radiation, and aggressive chemicals
- Specific Test Coverage:
- Operational state during testing
- Methods to maximize heat dissipation or adjust startup procedures during testing
- Material and component selection guidance based on marine exposure risks
Applications
SIST EN 300 019-2-6 V3.0.0:2006 is crucial for:
- Telecommunications manufacturers: Ensuring equipment used on ships complies with required maritime environmental standards.
- Shipbuilders and Marine Installers: Selecting, specifying, or verifying telecom hardware for shipboard deployment.
- Quality assurance and compliance teams: Conducting or overseeing standard-based testing as part of product development or supply chain processes.
- Regulatory and procurement organizations: Mandating compliance to international environmental and operational resilience standards for onboard communications.
Practical use cases include:
- Design and certification of radio, navigation, and network devices for maritime usage
- Testing resilience of critical communications equipment used on commercial ships, ferries, and support vessels
- Ensuring equipment installed in exposed bridge areas, engine rooms, or exterior decks will perform reliably under severe weather, temperature, humidity, and vibration
- Supporting lifecycle performance assessment and maintenance planning by understanding the environmental impacts on telecommunications infrastructure at sea

ETS 300 019-2-0 [3] forms a general overview of part 2 of the present document.
The equipment under test is assumed to be in its operational state throughout the test conditions described in this part
unless otherwise stated. The required performance before, during and after the test needs to be specified in the product
specification. Input and load conditions of the equipment shall be chosen to obtain full utilization of the equipment
under test. The heat dissipation shall be maximized, except for the steady state, low temperature test, where it shall be
minimized.
