Overview
SIST EN 4014:2005 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines the design requirements for aerospace series self-locking, thickwall inserts. These threaded inserts are essential components used in aerospace applications, providing secure fastening solutions by ensuring reliable screw thread retention under high-performance and high-temperature conditions. The standard specifies installation hole dimensions, usage guidelines, and provisions for component salvage, focusing on inserts manufactured according to EN specifications. It supports aerospace manufacturers in achieving consistent quality, safety, and interchangeability in critical fastening systems.
Key Topics
Design Requirements
SIST EN 4014:2005 outlines the design requirements for thickwall, self-locking inserts used in aerospace applications. These inserts have internal and external threads with an externally serrated upper portion designed for secure installation. The standard covers inserts for both blind and through tapped holes, emphasizing the need to avoid insert protrusion into critical abutment faces. Inserts conform to metric and MJ thread sizes aligned with ISO 5855 standards.Installation Hole Dimensions
The standard provides detailed installation hole dimensions and tolerances to guarantee the correct seating and locking of inserts. It distinguishes between normal size and repair size inserts with dimensions specified in tables for various bolt diameters (MJ5 to MJ10). Serration of the counterbore, mandatory for hard materials (R > 620 MPa), ensures the insert does not move during bolt installation or removal.Use and Performance
The self-locking feature relies on the deformation of the insert’s thread to achieve locking without additional hardware, enabling reusability. EN 4014 specifies a minimum performance of 25 bolt reuses at ambient temperature and 5 reuses after exposure to 350 °C bake, ensuring durability under typical aerospace operating conditions. Maximum torque values for locking and maximum permissible through-hole diameters are included to prevent interference with the self-locking mechanism.Installation and Salvage
Installation procedures reference EN 4015, ensuring inserts are set flush or slightly recessed (0.3 to 0.5 mm) from the surface. The standard also addresses provisions for component salvage, critical where machining errors or damaged holes must be repaired. Recommendations focus on balancing component cost, weight, and feasibility of repair operations, guiding aerospace manufacturers to select suitable inserts and repair methodologies.Designation and Drawing Indications
EN 4014 provides a clear system for designating inserts, including size codes and serration presence, facilitating accurate documentation. The standard specifies how to indicate inserts on engineering drawings, either with full dimensional details or by referencing the standard and insert code directly, promoting uniform communication across aerospace supply chains.
Applications
Aerospace Fastening Systems
The thickwall self-locking inserts standardized in EN 4014 are widely employed in aerospace structural components to provide durable, high-performance threaded connections. These inserts enhance load distribution and improve the mechanical reliability of bolted joints in aluminum alloys, titanium, and heat-resistant steels.Component Repair and Salvage
EN 4014 supports aerospace maintenance and repair operations by defining repair insert dimensions and installation practices, enabling effective restoration of damaged threaded holes without compromising structural integrity.High-Temperature and Reusable Fastenings
With proven performance at elevated temperatures and multiple reuse cycles, these inserts are suitable for critical engine components, airframe assemblies, and other demanding aerospace environments where reliability and durability are paramount.
Related Standards
- EN 3831 – Specifies the inserts’ material and thread characteristics in heat-resistant steel for aerospace applications, complementing EN 4014 design requirements.
- EN 4015 – Details installation and removal procedures for thickwall self-locking inserts, providing practical guidance for aerospace manufacturing and maintenance.
- ISO 5855-1 & ISO 5855-2 – Define requirements and limit dimensions for aerospace metric threads (MJ threads), which are directly referenced for compatibility in EN 4014.
SIST EN 4014:2005 ensures aerospace manufacturers and engineers have a robust framework for designing, specifying, and installing thickwall self-locking inserts with guaranteed mechanical performance and compatibility. Its focus on installation precision, reusability, and component salvage optimizes reliability and cost-effectiveness in demanding aerospace applications.
