Overview

EN 60317-56:2017 (CLC adoption of IEC 60317-56:2017) specifies requirements for solderable fully insulated (FIW) zero‑defect polyurethane enamelled round copper wire, class 180. It covers single‑coating polyurethane‑based enamel that may be chemically modified if the resin’s identity and all technical requirements are maintained. This edition (2017) supersedes the 2012 version and narrows the scope to FIW grades 4, 6 and 8 with nominal conductor diameters from 0.090 mm to 0.900 mm. It is intended for insulated wires used for windings in electrical equipment.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Thermal class: Class 180 - minimum temperature index of 180 °C; minimum heat‑shock temperature 200 °C.
  • Conductor size: Grades 4, 6, 8 with nominal diameters per IEC 60317-0-7 (0.090 mm to 0.900 mm range).
  • Mechanical and electrical tests (referenced to IEC 60317-0-7): dimensions, electrical resistance, elongation, springiness, flexibility and adherence.
  • Thermal and dielectric tests: heat shock, breakdown voltage (elevated temperature test at 180 °C), continuity of insulation, temperature index.
  • Chemical and environmental resistance: resistance to solvents, refrigerants, transformer oil, and loss of mass.
  • Surface and integrity tests: cut‑through, pin‑hole test, dielectric dissipation factor, solderability, heat/solvent bonding.
  • Abrasion resistance: mandatory for nominal diameters 0.250–0.900 mm for grades 4, 6 and 8 (Table 1 provides minimum average and minimum single values). Example values (grades 4/6/8): at 0.250 mm the minimum average4.10 N and minimum3.50 N; values increase with diameter up to 0.900 mm (≈ 8.70 N average, 7.40 N minimum). An informative annex adds abrasion criteria for grades FIW 3–9.
  • Packaging: requirements for delivery and protective packaging are included.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of enamelled winding wires (specification, quality control, test procedures).
  • Motor, transformer and inductor designers specifying insulated wires for coils and windings where solderability and high thermal performance (class 180) are required.
  • OEMs and procurement teams preparing material specs and acceptance criteria.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies performing mechanical, thermal and electrical verification.
  • Regulatory and compliance professionals ensuring product conformity to European/CENELEC adoption.

Related standards

  • IEC 60317 series (other FIW and winding wire specifications)
  • IEC 60317-0-7 (general requirements for fully insulated FIW zero‑defect enamelled round copper wire)
  • IEC 60851 (test methods for winding wires)
  • IEC 60264 (packaging of winding wires)
