SIST EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1:2007 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1, published by ETSI. It covers shipborne VHF radiotelephone transmitters and receivers for the maritime mobile service, including voice and Digital Selective Calling (DSC), and specifies the essential radio requirements used to show conformity with Article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive. Manufacturers, test laboratories, and conformity assessors use it to check spectrum use, unwanted emissions, receiver performance, and the test evidence needed for compliance claims.

What does SIST EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1:2007 specify?

SIST EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1:2007 specifies minimum requirements for shipborne Very High Frequency (VHF) transmitters and receivers operating in maritime mobile service bands with 25 kHz and 12.5 kHz channels. It is the Harmonized EN for the Article 3.2 essential requirement on effective spectrum use and avoidance of harmful interference.

The scope also says the document incorporates the relevant recommendations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Other ENs may still apply when equipment must meet other essential requirements of the R&TTE Directive.

The document is organized into these main parts:

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AHS Requirements & conformance Test specifications Table (HS-RTT) for presumption of conformity
Annex BEN title in the official languages
Annex CBibliography

Clause 1 states the scope, clause 2 lists references, clause 3 gives definitions and abbreviations, clause 4 sets technical requirements, and clause 5 gives the compliance tests and measurement rules.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1:2007?

SIST EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1:2007 builds its compliance route around defined transmitter and receiver performance items, plus test conditions and measurement uncertainty rules. In practice, the standard asks you to prove that the radio stays on frequency, radiates only allowed energy, and remains usable in the presence of interference.

Environmental profile and test conditions

Clause 4.1 requires tests to be carried out at representative points within the declared operational environmental profile, with at least the test conditions given in the document. It also expects the equipment to be checked under a sufficient variety of environmental conditions to give confidence in compliance. For a user or supplier, this means the declared operating environment must match the way the equipment is actually verified.

Clause 5.1 ties the test conditions, power supply, and ambient temperatures to EN 300 162-1. That matters because the same radio can behave differently under different supply and temperature conditions.

Transmitter requirements

Clauses 4.2.1 to 4.2.7 cover transmitter frequency error, carrier power, frequency deviation, adjacent channel power, conducted spurious emissions conveyed to the antenna, cabinet radiation and other conducted spurious emissions, and transient frequency behaviour. Each item takes its definition and limit from EN 300 162-1 and its test from clause 5.3.

These requirements matter because they control how accurately the transmitter occupies the intended channel and how much unwanted energy it sends into nearby channels or out of the equipment housing. For a buyer or compliance engineer, they are the core checks on spectrum etiquette and interference risk.

Receiver requirements

Clauses 4.2.8 to 4.2.16 cover maximum usable sensitivity, co-channel rejection, adjacent channel selectivity, spurious response rejection, intermodulation response, blocking or desensitization, receiver conducted spurious emissions, receiver radiated spurious emissions, and receiver desensitization during simultaneous transmission and reception for duplex equipment. Clause 5.4 gives the matching test specifications.

These requirements matter because they show whether the receiver can still hear a wanted signal when strong or unwanted signals are present. For practical procurement and testing, they indicate how well the equipment will behave in a crowded maritime radio environment.

Measurement uncertainty and reporting

Clause 5.2 requires the test report to include the measurement uncertainty for each parameter, and the reported uncertainty must be at or below the figures given in Table 1. The uncertainty is to be calculated in accordance with TR 100 028-1, using a coverage factor of k = 1.96 or k = 2.

This is important because conformity decisions are based on measured values plus their uncertainty, not just on the nominal result. In practice, labs need a validated uncertainty budget before their results can support a claim of compliance.

Presumption of conformity

Annex A provides the HS Requirements & conformance Test specifications Table (HS-RTT). It cross-references each requirement with its test clause and marks the transmitter requirements as part of the Essential Radio Test Suite, while the receiver requirements are listed in the Other Test Suite.

For users, Annex A is the quick map from requirement to test evidence. A completed HS-RTT table is the document’s route to a presumption of conformity under Article 3.2.

What terms does SIST EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1:2007 define?

  • Environmental profile - The range of environmental conditions under which the equipment must comply with the standard.
  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC) - The signalling function covered alongside voice operation in the shipborne VHF equipment.
  • Very High Frequency (VHF) - The frequency range used by the radiotelephone transmitters and receivers in scope.
  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) - The ability of equipment to operate without creating or suffering unacceptable electromagnetic disturbance.
  • Harmonized Standard (HS) - A standard intended to support conformity with the R&TTE Directive.
  • Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (R&TTE) - The directive framework referenced by the standard for essential requirements and conformity.

Who uses SIST EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1:2007?

SIST EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1:2007 is used by manufacturers of shipborne maritime VHF radios, especially equipment with voice and DSC functions. It is also used by test laboratories that measure transmitter and receiver performance, and by conformity assessment teams that prepare technical files and compliance statements.

Quality managers, regulatory specialists, and buyers use it to understand what evidence is needed before a radio is placed on the market or accepted into a product range. Maritime communication equipment suppliers use it when they need a clear test and documentation path for Article 3.2 compliance.

What changed in SIST EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1:2007 from the previous edition?

The document history shows that V1.2.1 follows V1.1.2. It also records a one-step approval procedure for the 2006 version before the final publication of V1.2.1.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 162-2 V1.2.1:2007?
