Overview

SIST EN 300 019-2-6 V2.1.2:2006 is a Slovenian standard that establishes environmental test methods and severity levels for telecommunications equipment intended for use aboard ships. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) and harmonized with the European standard EN 300 019-2-6, this document plays a vital role in ensuring that telecom devices can withstand the unique climatic and mechanical conditions encountered in maritime environments. The standard forms part of a larger series addressing the environmental engineering needs of telecommunications, focusing here on verification methods for equipment resistibility in permanent or temporary ship installations.

Key Topics

  • Environmental Test Classes: The standard defines three main environmental classes corresponding to different shipboard locations:
    • Totally weatherprotected locations
    • Partly weatherprotected locations
    • Non-weatherprotected locations
  • Test Methods and Severity: The document specifies appropriate environmental tests for telecommunications equipment based on their shipboard placement, covering:
    • Temperature and humidity extremes
    • Exposure to salt mist and chemically active substances
    • Mechanical stress including vibration, shock, and motion
    • Radiation and other ship-specific influences
  • Reference to International Methods: Testing procedures align with established methods, primarily drawn from IEC 60068-2 series, ensuring internationally recognized reliability and consistency.
  • Operational Verification: The standard underscores the importance of verifying equipment functionality before, during, and after environmental tests.

Applications

Organizations and manufacturers applying SIST EN 300 019-2-6 V2.1.2:2006 benefit from:

  • Design Validation: Assuring that telecommunications equipment operates reliably across a range of maritime conditions, including temperature fluctuations, humidity, salt spray, and mechanical impacts typical of ship environments.
  • Risk Reduction: By simulating real-world shipboard conditions, the environmental tests help reduce the likelihood of equipment failure, minimizing risk to communication infrastructure at sea.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ship operators and equipment manufacturers can demonstrate compliance with European maritime and telecommunication standards, facilitating acceptance in regulated markets.
  • Product Differentiation: Certification to this standard provides a clear market advantage, showcasing durability and suitability for challenging maritime applications.
  • Lifecycle Testing: Whether for new installations or retrofits, applying these environmental tests helps verify device suitability for permanent or temporary use on various vessel types.
  • Material and Component Selection: The standard informs important design decisions related to corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and material compatibility with marine environments.

Related Standards

  • EN 300 019-1-6:Classification of environmental conditions; Ship environments – Defines environmental classes referenced in this standard.
  • IEC 60068-2 Series: Fundamental test methods for environmental testing, cited throughout for physical and climatic test protocols.
