Abstract

This standard has one common requirements part plus specific parts for each of the radio equipment and services.  This harmonised standard under the EMC Directive and article 3.1b of the R&TTE Dirctive.  This does not include EMC requirements for equipment covered by the Marine Equipment Directive.

SIST EN 301 489-9:2001 is the Slovenian adoption of the ETSI EMC standard for wireless microphones and similar RF audio link equipment. It specifies the EMC test conditions, test methods, limits and performance criteria for this equipment family and its associated ancillary equipment, for use with the common requirements in EN 301 489-1.

What does SIST EN 301 489-9:2001 specify?

SIST EN 301 489-9:2001 covers EMC assessment for wireless microphones, similar RF audio link equipment, wideband cordless audio devices and associated ancillary equipment. The standard is part of the EN 301 489 series and is intended as a harmonised EMC standard under the EMC Directive and the R&TTE Directive.

It leaves antenna-port and enclosure-port spectrum specifications to the relevant product standards for radio spectrum use. It also sits alongside EN 301 489-1, which provides the common technical requirements used throughout the series.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AExamples of wireless microphones, similar RF audio link equipment and wideband cordless audio equipment within scope
Annex BAcoustic stimulation of wireless radiomicrophones and similar radio communications link equipment, including test setup and configuration

The document is organised into clauses for scope, references, definitions and abbreviations, test conditions, performance assessment, performance criteria and an applicability overview, followed by the two annexes.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 489-9:2001?

SIST EN 301 489-9:2001 adapts the general EMC framework of EN 301 489-1 to this product family. In practice, that means the equipment has to be tested in operating conditions that reflect how these audio radio systems are actually used.

Test conditions and signal arrangements

Clause 4 sets out how to build the test setup for transmitters, receivers and transceivers. For EMC testing, body-worn or handheld transmitters are placed on a non-conductive stand, and detachable antennas are fitted as they would be in normal use. For transmitters with integral or dedicated microphones, acoustic coupling may be used to inject the test modulation, which matters because these products do not always have a simple electrical input.

For receivers, the wanted RF input is set so that the audio path is exercised at full modulation. The audio output is coupled to a SINAD measuring system with specified measurement characteristics, so the recovered signal can be judged consistently.

Exclusion bands and narrowband responses

Clause 4.3 defines transmitter and receiver exclusion bands from the declared switching range. The manufacturer declares the equipment category to the test house, and the category affects the exclusion-band limits. Clause 4.4 also addresses narrowband responses in receivers, using SINAD as the indicator, which helps separate genuine wanted responses from spurious ones.

Performance criteria and equipment categories

Clause 6 splits the product family into three categories: professional entertainment, domestic entertainment, and general communications. The category has to be stated in the user documentation because it determines which performance criterion applies.

For equipment that can sustain a communications link, the standard checks that the link is established, maintained during stress, and recovered after testing. Continuous phenomena use criterion A or the category-specific SINAD limits; transient phenomena use criterion B, with recovery expectations after the test sequence. For equipment that cannot maintain a continuous link, clause 6.3 assigns the criterion according to category and test type.

Emission and immunity applicability

Clause 7 points back to EN 301 489-1 for the general applicability of emission and immunity measurements, then adds product-specific conditions. For emissions, the equipment is operated on one channel near the middle of the declared switching range, and the transmitter runs at maximum rated RF power in transmit mode. For immunity, transmitters are also tested at maximum rated RF output power, with all available operating modes exercised.

What terms does SIST EN 301 489-9:2001 define?

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) - the ability of equipment to operate without causing or suffering unacceptable electromagnetic disturbance.

Radio Frequency (RF) - the radio-frequency part of the equipment’s signal path.

Equipment Under Test (EUT) - the device being assessed in the EMC test.

SINAD - the ratio of signal plus noise plus distortion to noise plus distortion, used here to judge audio receiver performance.

Companding - audio processing that compresses the signal before transmission and expands it again in the receiver.

Integral antenna - an antenna built into the equipment or attached as part of it, without a 50 Ω external connector.

Switching range - the maximum frequency range over which the receiver or transmitter operates without reprogramming or realignment.

Who uses SIST EN 301 489-9:2001?

Manufacturers of wireless microphones, RF audio links and wideband cordless audio devices use this standard when designing products and preparing EMC evidence. Test laboratories use it to set up the equipment, inject test signals and assess SINAD, link retention and recovery. Quality managers, conformity assessment teams and buyers use it to check that a product is being declared for the right use category - professional entertainment, domestic entertainment or general communications.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 489-9:2001?

The main companion standard is EN 301 489-1, which supplies the common technical requirements, general test conditions and the base emission and immunity framework. The foreword also links the document to Directive 1999/5/EC, Council Directive 89/336/EEC and Directive 98/34/EC. For product context, the bibliography names EN 300 422, ETS 300 454 and EN 301 357.

What does the SIST EN 301 489-9:2001 document contain?

The document contains the EMC test conditions for this radio-audio equipment family, including signal arrangements for transmitter and receiver testing. It also contains the performance assessment rules, the category-based performance criteria, and the special emission and immunity conditions that modify the general EN 301 489-1 approach.

Annex A gives examples of the equipment types covered, including wireless radiomicrophones and cordless wideband audio equipment. Annex B gives practical acoustic-stimulation guidance for testing microphone-based systems, including coupling methods and setup considerations.
