This European Standard specifies the general characteristics, type test performance and certification requirements for flexible carrier bags used for the transport of various not specified retail goods. For specified retail goods there shall be an agreement between buyer and supplier about the application of this standard.

Diese Europäische Norm legt die allgemeinen Merkmale, die Leistungsfähigkeit bei der Bauartprüfung und die Anforderungen für die Zertifizierung von Tragetaschen für den Transport unterschiedlicher nicht einzeln festgelegter Einzelhandelsgüter fest. Für im einzelnen festgelegte Einzelhandelsgüter muß zwischen Käufer und Lieferer eine Vereinbarung über die Anwendung dieser Norm getroffen werden. Diese Europäische Norm ist auf jede Art von Tragetaschen mit Tragegriffen aus Papier, Thermoplasten und/oder irgendeinem sonstigen flexiblen Material anwendbar.

Pour les marchandises de détail spécifiques, il convient que l'application de la présente norme fasse l'objet d'un accord entre le fournisseur et l'acheteur.

EN 13590:2003 (CEN) is a European standard for flexible carrier bags used to transport a variety of retail goods. It defines general characteristics, type-test performance and certification requirements, and precise test methods for determining bag volume and carrying capacity. The standard applies to bags made of paper, thermoplastic film or other flexible materials and is intended for unspecified retail goods (for specific goods, buyer–supplier agreement is required).

  • Equipment and fixtures: Test rig with a hand-shaped grip and handle stop to replicate real carrying conditions; photocell or equivalent to control turning point.
  • Marking and labelling: Bags must be marked with supplier identification, date (year/month or week), reference to EN 13590, declared carrying capacity (kg) and volume (L) - values must not exceed tested results.
  • Test reporting: Test laboratory, supplier, bag description, results per bag, measured volume and carrying capacity must be recorded.
