Overview

SIST EN ISO 6869:2001 is an international standard that specifies a method for determining the contents of key minerals - calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium, and zinc - in animal feeding stuffs. The method utilizes atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), a precise analytical technique widely recognized in the feed and food industry. This standard ensures consistent and reliable determination of mineral content, supporting quality control, nutritional labeling, and regulatory compliance in the production of compound animal feeds.

Key Topics

  • Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS): The standard outlines the procedures for sample preparation and the use of AAS to measure trace and macro minerals accurately in feed materials.
  • Essential Minerals: SIST EN ISO 6869:2001 focuses on the analysis of calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium, and zinc - all crucial for animal nutrition and health.
  • Quality Assurance: The methodology supports laboratories and feed manufacturers in achieving reproducible results for routine monitoring and quality control.
  • International Alignment: Adopted by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and identical to EN ISO 6869:2000, this standard aligns with European and international testing requirements for animal feeds.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 6869:2001 is a key reference for the following practical applications:

  • Feed Manufacturers: Ensures precise formulation by verifying the mineral content in raw materials and finished products, optimizing animal diet formulations for health, growth, and productivity.
  • Testing Laboratories: Provides a standardized procedure for the routine analysis of mineral elements in animal feeding stuffs, improving inter-laboratory reliability.
  • Quality Control and Certification: Assists in meeting regulatory requirements for feed safety, facilitating certification and compliance in global markets.
  • Research Institutions: Supports studies on animal nutrition, mineral bioavailability, and feed composition analysis.
  • Regulatory Authorities: Aids in monitoring and enforcement of mineral content limits in commercial feeds to ensure animal welfare and public health.

Related Standards

SIST EN ISO 6869:2001 complements several other standards for the analysis of animal feeds and agricultural products:

  • ISO 6491: Determination of phosphorus content in animal feeding stuffs.
  • ISO 6868: Determination of crude ash in animal feeding stuffs.
  • EN ISO 17025: General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.
  • ISO 6490-2: Determination of calcium content in animal feeding stuffs by titrimetric methods.
  • EN ISO 6887 Series: Preparation of test samples for microbiological analysis of feeding stuffs.

By following SIST EN ISO 6869:2001, organizations can ensure high standards of accuracy and consistency in the measurement of essential minerals, fulfilling industry needs for quality, transparency, and regulatory compliance in the animal feed sector.
