(Main)Cranes — Limiting and indicating devices — Part 4: Jib cranes
- Abstract
This document specifies the requirements for devices which either limit or indicate, or limit and indicate the loads, motions, performance and environment of jib cranes. The general requirements for limiting and indicating devices for cranes are given in ISO 10245-1. This document applies to jib cranes (except for cantilever crane) as defined in ISO 4306-4. This document does not apply to the mobile, tower, railway, floating and offshore cranes defined in ISO 4306-1.

ISO 10245-4:2026 is an ISO standard from the International Organization for Standardization for limiting and indicating devices on jib cranes. It specifies how these devices are to limit or indicate loads, motions, performance and environmental conditions on jib cranes, so manufacturers, installers, operators and buyers can select and verify the right crane protection functions.
What does ISO 10245-4:2026 specify?
ISO 10245-4:2026 applies to jib cranes, except cantilever crane, as defined in ISO 4306-4. It sits on top of the general requirements in ISO 10245-1 and then adds jib-crane-specific requirements.
The document is organized into scope, normative references, terms and definitions, general requirements, rated capacity devices, motion and performance devices, and an informative annex on recording functions.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Event recorder and data logger on jib cranes |
What are the key requirements of ISO 10245-4:2026?
General provisions
ISO 10245-4:2026 requires all limiters and indicators for jib cranes to follow the general requirements in ISO 10245-1. It also requires any limiter or indicator with an essential variable reading or status to be readable from the operator's control station. In practice, the operator must be able to see the relevant safety information without leaving the controls.
Table 1 assigns the required devices to different jib crane configurations, including attachment portal slewing, semi-portal, high mast, fixed-base and derrick cranes. The table shows which functions are required, optional, not applicable, required if applicable, or required for limited slewing jib cranes. This helps the user know which safety devices must be fitted to a given crane type.
Rated capacity limiter and indicator
ISO 10245-4:2026 requires a rated capacity limiter and indicator on jib cranes with a rated capacity of 1 t or above, or with an overturning moment greater than 40 000 N·m due to the load. The limiter setting is tied to ISO 10245-1:2021, and the device must account for static and dynamic forces. In practice, the crane is checked at low speed and the limiter is set so the crane is protected before overload is reached.
The rated capacity limiter is set between 100 % and 110 % of rated capacity. The rated capacity indicator must give a continuous visual or audible warning, or both, when the load approaches rated capacity, and the warning starts at 90 % to 95 %. That gives the operator time to react before the crane reaches its limit.
Motion and performance devices
ISO 10245-4:2026 requires motion and performance limiters to meet ISO 10245-1:2021 and to be connected to the control system so hazardous situations are prevented. For hydraulic systems, the document notes that cylinder travel or mechanical stops can satisfy this need, although pressure-relief valves may still be needed to protect crane parts.
For motion and performance indicators, the document again points to ISO 10245-1:2021. Where rated capacity changes with radius, the crane must have either a radius indicator or a boom-angle indicator. This matters because the operator needs to know when geometry, not just load, changes the safe working condition.
Event recorder and data logger
Clause 7 points users to Annex A for guidance on event recorders and data loggers. Annex A links these devices to use monitoring, malfunction monitoring and recording of operating history. It also gives practical points on data access, anti-tampering measures and recording capacity.
What terms does ISO 10245-4:2026 define?
ISO 10245-4:2026 uses the terms and definitions from ISO 4306-1, ISO 4306-4 and ISO 10245-1. Key terms include:
- Rated capacity limiter - a device that prevents lifting beyond the set rated capacity; the note also calls it a load limiter or lifting force limiter.
- Rated capacity indicator - a device that warns the operator as the load approaches rated capacity.
- Motion and performance limiter - a device that restricts movement or operation to avoid unsafe conditions.
- Motion and performance indicator - a device that shows the operator a motion- or performance-related condition.
- Event recorder - a device that stores load-related, geometric and control data when trigger events occur.
- Data logger - a device that records crane data automatically, independent of operator action or events.
Who uses ISO 10245-4:2026?
ISO 10245-4:2026 is used by crane manufacturers, control-system suppliers, designers, installers and commissioning teams working on jib cranes. It is also useful for purchasers, quality managers and site users who need to specify, check or operate limiting and indicating devices on installed cranes. Annex A is especially relevant when a site decides whether to add recording functions based on its risk analysis.
What changed in ISO 10245-4:2026 from the previous edition?
ISO 10245-4:2026 cancels and replaces ISO 10245-4:2004. The foreword states that this second edition is technically revised, aligned with ISO 10245-1, includes revised Table 1 and related device requirements, and adds the recommendations for event recorder and data recorder functions.
Which standards are used with ISO 10245-4:2026?
- ISO 4306-1 - provides general crane vocabulary used by the document.
- ISO 4306-4 - provides jib crane vocabulary used for the scope and terms.
- ISO 10245-1 - gives the general requirements for limiting and indicating devices for cranes.
- ISO 10245-1:2021 - supplies the specific clauses cited for setting, operating and indicating the devices in this part.
What does the ISO 10245-4:2026 document contain?
The document contains the scope, normative references, terms and definitions, general requirements, and detailed requirements for rated capacity and motion-related devices. It includes Table 1, which maps safety devices to different jib crane configurations, and Annex A, which gives guidance on event recorders and data loggers.
It also contains a bibliography and references to the related ISO 4306 and ISO 10245 series. For users, the most practical parts are the device selection table, the limiter setting rules, the warning thresholds, and the guidance on recording operating data.
