Overview

ISO 4548-6:2021 specifies a standardized method for testing full-flow lubricating oil filters used in internal combustion engines, focusing on their static burst pressure capabilities. This third edition enhances previous protocols to ensure accuracy and repeatability when determining a filter's ability to withstand static pressure, identify its burst pressure, and analyze failure modes. The standard excludes filters used in aeronautical applications and plastic components. It is essential for manufacturers and quality assurance professionals seeking to verify product reliability and safety in demanding engine environments.

Key Topics

  • Static Burst Pressure Test
The document details a precise procedure to measure the maximum static pressure a lubricating oil filter can endure before failure, ensuring filter integrity under operational pressure.

  • Test Setup and Equipment
The standard specifies the hydraulic test rig configuration, including pumps, pressure sensors (0 kPa to 3000 kPa or higher), valves, and transparent safety shields to protect operators during testing.

  • Test Fluid Specifications
ISO Grade 22 oil with a viscosity index (VI) of 96, typically SAE 5W oil at ambient temperature, must be used to simulate realistic operating conditions.

  • Preparation and Testing Procedure
Procedures include assembly of the filter under recommended torque, air exclusion from the system, incremental pressure application with leak and distortion checks, and monitoring until filter failure.

  • Data Analysis and Reporting
Statistical evaluation such as Weibull analysis is encouraged for multiple samples to estimate rated static pressure at a 95% confidence level. Detailed reporting requirements help maintain test consistency and traceability.

  • Failure Mode Identification
The standard requires detailed documentation of failure characteristics and locations after burst, supporting product improvement and failure analysis.

Applications

  • Automotive Engine Manufacturing
Ensuring the safety and durability of oil filters used in automotive internal combustion engines through validated pressure ratings.

  • Quality Control and Certification
Helps manufacturers and testing laboratories confirm compliance with safety requirements, reducing risk of filter failure in service.

  • Research and Development
Provides a benchmark test method for R&D teams developing advanced lubricating oil filters with enhanced pressure resistance.

  • Customer-Supplier Verification
Facilitates mutually agreed testing protocols between filter manufacturers and purchasers to ascertain reliability under specified pressures.

Related Standards

  • ISO 4548-1: Methods of test for full-flow lubricating oil filters – Differential pressure/flow characteristics
Complements ISO 4548-6 by assessing filter flow resistance and pressure drop properties.

  • ISO 12829: Hydraulic spin-on filters – Fatigue life and static burst pressure verification
Extends testing methods applicable to some spin-on filter designs.

  • ISO 19973-1: Pneumatic fluid power – Assessment of component reliability by testing
Provides statistical reliability testing procedures referenced in ISO 4548-6 for burst pressure analysis.

  • SAE J300c: Engine oil viscosity classification
Relevant for selecting appropriate test fluids consistent with engine oil viscosity standards.

  • ISO 3448: Industrial liquid lubricants – ISO viscosity classification
Offers guidance on lubricant viscosity grades used during filter burst pressure tests.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).

This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 4548-6:2012), which has been technically
revised. The main changes in the third edition are as follows:
— The verification that filters meet technical requirements and the determination of the filter failing
pressure have been separated into 6.1 and 6.2, respectively.
— The first pressure increment in the verification has been specified with a known value.
— Each incremental pressure has been changed to the smaller value for more accurate determination.
