Overview

ISO 1033:1975 is an important international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the dimensions for general purpose push-pull three-pole circuit-breakers used in aircraft. This standard applies to circuit-breakers with current ratings up to and including 35 A. It ensures uniformity and interchangeability of these critical safety components, facilitating consistent design, manufacturing, and maintenance processes within the aerospace industry.

The document provides detailed measurements of the circuit-breakers and the related mounting panel cutouts, aiming to standardize how these circuit-breakers fit and operate within aircraft systems. This standard is essential for aircraft equipment designers, manufacturers, and maintenance personnel who require precise and consistent specifications for reliable electrical protection devices.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Field of Application
The standard targets push-pull three-pole circuit-breakers designed for aircraft applications, focusing on ratings up to 35 amperes. It highlights the importance of verifying that the circuit-breaker’s rupturing capacity is adequate for the specific electrical environment where it will be used.

  • Dimensional Specifications
ISO 1033 details exact dimensions for the circuit-breakers, including the overall size, the portion that projects through the mounting panel, and the thread type for fixing the breaker to the panel.

    • Maximum dimensions are specified in millimeters and inches for various aspects (e.g., height, width, panel cutout holes).
    • The circuit-breaker case includes a male thread (12 mm diameter, 1 mm pitch or equivalent) at the center of the front face for secure mounting.
  • Panel Mounting and Hole Configuration
The standard provides precise guidelines for the holes in aircraft panels to mount these circuit-breakers safely and securely. A small panel hole may serve as an anti-rotation feature to prevent unintended movement of the breaker after installation.

Applications

ISO 1033:1975 is primarily applied in the aerospace industry for:

  • Aircraft Electrical Systems
Ensuring that push-pull circuit-breakers conforming to standardized dimensions can be easily integrated and replaced in aircraft electrical panels without modification.

  • Aircraft Maintenance and Repairs
Providing maintenance engineers with dimensional references to source compatible circuit-breakers and panels, improving efficiency and safety during aircraft servicing.

  • Component Manufacturing
Guiding manufacturers in producing circuit-breakers that meet global aerospace dimensional standards, fostering interoperability and reducing design discrepancies.

  • System Safety and Reliability
Enabling designers to select circuit-breakers that fit specified mounting requirements, ensuring secure installation and preventing electrical failures caused by improper fitting or panel deformation.

Related Standards

When working with ISO 1033:1975, it is beneficial to consider associated standards in aircraft electrical and safety equipment, including:

  • ISO/TC 20 Series: Covers various aircraft equipment and components standards developed by the Technical Committee 20, including electrical installations.

  • Electrical Circuit Protection Standards: Other international or national standards defining characteristics such as breaking capacity, electrical performance, and environmental resilience of circuit-breakers in aviation.

  • Panel and Mounting Standards: Specifications dealing with aircraft panel construction, hole patterning, and fastening methods to ensure compatibility with standard circuit-breaker dimensions.

ISO 1033:1975 plays a key role in standardizing aircraft push-pull circuit-breaker dimensions, promoting compatibility, safety, and reliability across the aerospace industry. Adhering to this standard ensures that critical electrical protection devices are correctly sized and mounted, which is vital for the safe operation of modern aircraft electrical systems.

FOREWORD
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation
of national Standards institutes (ISO Member Bodies). The work of developing
International Standards is carried out through ISO Technical Committees. Every
Member Body interested in a subject for which a Technical Committee has been set
up has the right to be represented on that Committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the Technical Committees are circulated
to the Member Bodies for approval before their acceptance as International
Standards by the ISO Council.
Prior to 1972, the results of the work of the Technical Committees were published
as ISO Recommendations; these documents are now in the process of being
transformed into International Standards. As part of this process, Technical
Committee ISO/TC 20 has reviewed ISO Recommendation R 1033 and found it
technically suitable for transformation. International Standard ISO 1033 therefore
replaces ISO Recommendation R 1033-1969 to which it is technically identical.
ISO Recommendation R 1033 was approved by the Member Bodies of the
