Overview

ISO 5768:1998 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines the precise position and dimensions of the image area produced by the camera aperture Type W on 16 mm motion-picture film. The standard focuses on the image intended for enlargement to non-anamorphic 35 mm motion-picture film with an aspect ratio of 1.66:1 or greater. It aims to provide consistency and accuracy in cinematographic film production and optical printing, ensuring compatible image sizes when enlarging 16 mm film images to 35 mm formats.

By establishing these uniform specifications, ISO 5768:1998 facilitates standardized workflow in film production, post-production, and archival processes, enhancing compatibility across various motion-picture technologies.

Key Topics

  • Camera Aperture Type W: Defines the specific aperture size and configuration used on 16 mm motion-picture cameras.
  • Image Dimensions on 16 mm Film: Specifies the exact size and positioning of the image area recorded on 16 mm film stock.
  • Enlargement to 35 mm Film: Provides the dimensions and location of the image area on 35 mm internegatives or duplicate negatives when enlarged optically from 16 mm originals.
  • Aspect Ratio Compatibility: Focuses on aspect ratios of 1.66:1 or greater for non-anamorphic 35 mm film formats.
  • Optical Printing Enlargement Ratio: Establishes an enlargement ratio of 1.778:1 to maintain image consistency and quality during optical printing.
  • Tolerances and Measurements: Includes detailed tables listing measurements in millimeters and inches for cross-regional relevance, allowing for precision across metric and imperial systems.
  • Informative Annex on Equivalent Projectable Image Areas: Provides guidance on determining image areas used for screening or viewing during editing, though 16 mm Type W images are not originally intended for projection release.

Applications

The ISO 5768:1998 standard serves multiple practical purposes in the field of cinematography and motion-picture film processing:

  • Film Production and Camera Usage: Camera operators and film technicians utilize this standard to ensure correct framing and image size on 16 mm film that will later be enlarged to 35 mm releases.
  • Post-Production and Optical Printing: Producers and technicians responsible for optical printing use exact measurements and enlargement ratios to maintain image fidelity and adhere to industry standards.
  • Film Archiving and Preservation: Archivists apply the defined dimensions to preserve original film material integrity and ensure accurate reproduction or enlargement.
  • Quality Control and Standardization: Manufacturers of camera equipment and motion-picture film stock incorporate these standards to achieve system-wide compatibility and quality assurance.
  • Film Editing and Viewing: Editors referring to the equivalent projectable image areas can better visualize the final output during work-in-progress screenings or rushes review.

Related Standards

For professionals seeking comprehensive understanding and implementation of motion-picture film specifications, the following ISO standards are closely related to ISO 5768:1998:

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 5768 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 36, Cinematography.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 5768:1996),
of which it constitutes a minor revision. In table 1, the tolerances have been
removed from reference dimension C.

mondiale d'organismes nationaux de normalisation (comités membres de
l'ISO).
