Overview

ISO 3193:2008 is an essential international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the dimensions of normal hexagonal head bolts used in the aerospace industry. These bolts feature a normal shank with close or large tolerances, short or medium length MJ threads, and are made from metallic materials that can be coated or uncoated. The standard applies exclusively to bolts with strength classes less than or equal to 1,100 MPa. Its primary focus is to provide dimensional specifications ensuring the reliable design and manufacture of fasteners critical to aerospace product standards.

Key Topics

  • Bolt Configuration and Dimensions
ISO 3193 defines the detailed dimensions for hexagonal head bolts including:

    • Normal shank diameter with tolerance classes (close or large)
    • Short or medium length MJ thread profiles conforming to aerospace requirements
    • Dimensions expressed in millimeters, applicable post-coating but pre-lubrication
  • Material and Coating
The bolts covered are constructed from metallic materials with options for coating to enhance performance and corrosion resistance without affecting dimensional accuracy.

  • Strength Classes
Bolts are standardized for strength classes ≤ 1,100 MPa, ensuring suitability for specific aerospace load and stress requirements.

  • Tolerance and Fits
The standard references ISO 7913 for tolerances of form and position, and ISO 286-2 for limits and fits concerning holes and shafts to guarantee interchangeability and precision assembly.

  • Thread Specifications
Short to medium length MJ threads are specified following ISO 3353-1 and ISO 5855-2, which define rolled external threads and limit dimensions for bolts and nuts in aerospace applications.

Applications

ISO 3193:2008 bolts are critically applied in the following aerospace contexts:

  • Aircraft Structural Fastening
Ensuring mechanical joints in fuselage, wings, landing gear, and control surfaces meet rigorous safety and reliability standards.

  • Space Vehicle Assemblies
Providing dependable fastening solutions for spacecraft components where dimensional precision and material performance are paramount.

  • Maintenance and Repair Operations
Standardized bolts simplify replacement and maintenance in aerospace manufacturing and field servicing by guaranteeing consistent size and mechanical properties.

  • Aerospace Product Standards Compilation
This ISO standard is integral to forming comprehensive aerospace fastener requirements enabling compatibility across various manufacturers and suppliers.

Related Standards

Compliance with ISO 3193:2008 often involves coordination with other related ISO standards including:

  • ISO 286-2: Tolerance Grades for Holes and Shafts
Provides standard tolerance grades ensuring proper fit between bolts and mating parts.

  • ISO 3353-1: Aerospace Lead and Runout Threads
Details specifications for rolled external threads relevant to MJ thread profiles.

  • ISO 5855-2: Aerospace MJ Threads - Limit Dimensions
Specifies precise limits for bolt thread dimensions critical for aerospace fastener compatibility.

  • ISO 7913: Bolts and Screws Tolerances
Outlines tolerances for form and positional accuracy essential to maintaining dimensional fidelity.

By adhering to ISO 3193:2008, aerospace manufacturers and engineers can ensure fastener consistency, safety, and quality performance in demanding aviation and space environments. The standard guarantees that bolted joints maintain structural integrity while allowing for interchangeability and ease of assembly-cornerstones for aerospace engineering excellence.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 3193 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 20, Aircraft and space vehicles, Subcommittee SC 4,
Aerospace fastener systems.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 3193:1991) and Technical Corrigendum 1
(1992), which have been technically revised.
