ISO 23150-12:2026 is an International Standard from ISO for road vehicles with automated driving (AD) functions. It specifies the technology-specific logical interfaces for lidar sensors and sensor clusters at feature level interface (FLI), advanced detection level interface (ADLI), and detection level interface (DLI), so teams can align lidar outputs with the data fusion unit in a common logical format.

What does ISO 23150-12:2026 specify?

ISO 23150-12:2026 specifies the lidar-specific logical interfaces used in the ISO 23150 series for automated driving systems. It covers the logical data exchange, not the electrical or mechanical connector design, and it excludes raw data interfaces.

The document is organized into Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Abbreviated terms, Feature level, Advanced detection level, Detection level, and Annex A on lidar interface signals. Clause 7 contains the main interface content, and Annex A provides the signal definitions used by the lidar detection interface (LDI).

What are the key requirements of ISO 23150-12:2026?

ISO 23150-12:2026 keeps lidar interface design focused on the detection level. For lidar sensors and sensor clusters, it defines no FLI in Clause 5 and no ADLI in Clause 6, so implementation work centers on the LDI in Clause 7.

LDI structure and basis

Clause 7.1 says the LDI shall be based on the generic sensor detection interface in ISO 23150-1:2026. In practice, this means implementers use the generic structure and then apply the lidar-specific adaptations listed in this part.

Header content

Clause 7.2 and Table 3 define the lidar detection header. The header carries the interface version ID, interface ID, number of valid serving sensors, sensor ID, time stamp, cycle counter, interface cycle time, interface cycle time variation, and data qualifier, with several generic profile and option references taken from ISO 23150-1:2026. This is the part that lets a receiver identify the interface version, sensor source, timing, and data quality.

Detection entity content

Clause 7.3 says each lidar detection shall describe a measured detection and consist of several logical signal groups (LSGs). The entity status includes existence probability, detection ID, object ID reference when applicable, and time stamp difference at detection level. The entity also includes lidar-specific information, position, and dynamics, so the fusion unit can place each detection in space and track motion-related data.

Lidar-specific signals in the annex

Annex A defines the lidar-specific signals used with the detection level. It includes the lidar detection relative strength order for sorting detections by signal strength, the extent {height} - lidar signal for vertically clustered scan points, and the matching error signal for that extent. For a buyer or integrator, this is the part that shows which lidar measurements must be represented when points are clustered or ordered.

Profiles and shared options

Clause 7.4 states that no specific profiles are defined for LDI. Instead, the document relies on the generic profiles and signal options from ISO 23150-1:2026, so implementations stay aligned with the broader series.

What terms does ISO 23150-12:2026 define?

ISO 23150-12:2026 uses the common terms from ISO 23150-1 and adds a set of abbreviations for lidar interface work.

  • AD (automated driving) - The vehicle function context covered by the standard.
  • FLI (feature level interface) - The feature-level logical interface, which this part states is not defined for lidar.
  • ADLI (advanced detection level interface) - The advanced detection-level logical interface, which this part states is not defined for lidar.
  • DLI (detection level interface) - The lidar interface level used for detections and the main focus of the document.
  • LDI (lidar detection interface) - The specific lidar detection interface defined in Clause 7.
  • LSG (logical signal group) - A grouped set of signals used to structure interface data.
  • OLI (object level interface) - The object-level interface referenced as a related part of the ISO 23150 series.

Who uses ISO 23150-12:2026?

ISO 23150-12:2026 is used by lidar sensor suppliers, sensor cluster developers, automated driving system integrators, and data fusion unit designers. It is also relevant to verification, validation, quality, and procurement teams that need to specify or check the logical data exchanged by lidar in an AD architecture.

What changed in ISO 23150-12:2026 from the previous edition?

ISO 23150-12:2026 is the first edition and, together with the other parts of the updated ISO 23150 series, cancels and replaces ISO 23150:2023. The stated changes are a reorganization of the document structure, use of the generic interfaces, signals, profiles, and terms from ISO 23150-1 as the basis, separation of technology-specific interfaces into separate documents, and a revision of the logical interfaces.

Which standards are used with ISO 23150-12:2026?

ISO 23150-12:2026 normatively refers to ISO 23150-1:2026, which provides the general information and principles, generic interfaces, and generic signals used throughout the lidar part. The ISO 23150 series parts named alongside this document are ISO 23150-2 for object level interfaces, ISO 23150-11 for radar specific interfaces, ISO 23150-13 for camera specific interfaces, ISO 23150-14 for ultrasonic specific interfaces, ISO 23150-15 for microphone specific interfaces, and ISO 23150-20 for supportive and sensor input interfaces.

What does the ISO 23150-12:2026 document contain?

ISO 23150-12:2026 contains the lidar-specific clauses for feature level, advanced detection level, and detection level, plus the detailed detection header and detection entity structure. It also includes Annex A with the lidar interface signals and three signal tables for relative strength order, extent {height} - lidar, and extent {height} - lidar - error. These parts are what an engineer uses to map sensor outputs into the ISO 23150 logical interface model and what a tester uses to check that the right signals and groupings are present.

iv
Introduction
Vehicle environmental perception sensors (single sensor or sensor cluster) provide logical interfaces,
according to the ISO 23150 series, to the fusion unit or automated driving functions. The fusion unit
generates a surround model and interprets the scene around the vehicle based on the sensor data. Interfaces
are defined at different levels and described in a modular and semantic representation. The interfaces
on feature level, advanced detection level and detection level are technology-specific and differ for each
technology.
Figure 1 shows the schematic and contextual relationships between the documents relating to logical
interfaces of the ISO 23150 series.
