Overview

ISO 4603:1993/Amd 1:2010 is an amendment to the international standard ISO 4603 that specifies the method for the determination of thickness of textile glass woven fabrics. Textile glass fabrics are widely used in industrial applications, especially in composite materials, where accurate measurement of fabric thickness is essential for quality control and product consistency. This amendment updates sampling conditions and measurement techniques to improve the precision and applicability of thickness determination.

This standard is published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and forms an important reference in the field of textile glass materials testing, ensuring uniformity and reliability in thickness measurement worldwide.

Key Topics

  • Scope adjustment: The minimum thickness measurable has been reduced from 0.1 mm to 0.01 mm, allowing for finer fabric thickness evaluations.
  • Measurement conditions: Introduction of two alternative sets of conditions for thickness measurement:
    • Set 1 for woven fabrics of continuous single yarns, folded (plied) yarns, or rovings, utilizing a measuring foot diameter of 6.35 mm with a standard pressure of 176 kPa.
    • Set 2 for woven fabrics of staple-fibre or textured yarns, using a larger measuring foot diameter of 56.43 mm at low or high pressures depending on fabric type and application.
  • Pressure and measuring foot diameter variations: Measurement parameters must be agreed upon by involved parties to fit specific fabric types and applications, such as electrical use or high yarn density fabrics that require higher pressures.
  • Referenced standards: Integration with related ISO standards including ISO 139 (conditioning and testing atmospheres for textiles), ISO 291 (conditioning and testing of plastics), and ISO 2602 (statistical interpretation of test results).
  • Reporting requirements: Detailed reporting of pressure and the measuring foot diameter used in thickness measurements to ensure consistent and reproducible test results.

Applications

ISO 4603:1993/Amd 1:2010 is critical for industries where textile glass woven fabrics are utilized, including:

  • Composite manufacturing: Thickness measurements ensure composite laminates achieve the desired mechanical properties and structural integrity.
  • Electrical and electronic sectors: Accurate fabric thickness determines dielectric properties and insulation effectiveness in components.
  • Aerospace and automotive industries: Ensures textile glass materials conform to strict thickness tolerances for safety and performance.
  • Quality control laboratories: Provides a standardized method for material evaluation, enabling consistent product acceptance criteria.
  • Research and development: Enables development of new fabric formulations by accurately assessing thickness variations under different manufacturing conditions.

Related Standards

  • ISO 139 – Textiles: Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing, critical for ensuring consistent testing environments.
  • ISO 291 – Plastics: Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing, relevant due to composite material manufacturing overlaps.
  • ISO 2602 – Statistical interpretation of test results, important for accurate data analysis and confidence in thickness measurements.
  • ISO 5084 – Textiles: Determination of thickness of textiles and textile products, which is referenced and updated in this amendment.

ISO 4603:1993/Amd.1:2010(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

Amendment 1 to ISO 4603:1993 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee
SC 13, Composites and reinforcement fibres.

Avant-propos
votants.
