Information technology - Conformance testing methodology for biometric data interchange formats defined in ISO/IEC 19794 - Part 9: Vascular image data

ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007 specifies a data record interchange format for recording, storing, and transmitting one or more hand vascular images. Each image is accompanied by image-specific metadata contained in a header record. ISO/IEC 29109-9:2011 establishes tests for checking the correctness of the binary record. It defines a testing methodology to ensure conformance of a vendor's application or service to ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007. The objective of ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007 cannot be completely achieved until biometric products can be tested to determine whether they conform to those specifications. Conforming implementations are a necessary prerequisite for achieving interoperability among implementations. The conformance test assertions will cover, as much as is practical, the ISO/IEC 19794 requirements (covering the most critical features), so that the conformity results produced by the test suites will reflect the real degree of conformity of the implementations to ISO/IEC 19794 data interchange format records. This is the motivation for the development of this conformance testing methodology.

Overview

ISO/IEC 29109-9:2011 specifies a conformance testing methodology for vascular image data records defined in ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007. Its purpose is to establish repeatable, objective tests that verify the correctness of the binary biometric data record for hand vascular images (metadata + pixel data). By providing Level 1 (structure) and Level 2 (internal consistency) test assertions, this part of ISO/IEC 29109 helps vendors, implementers and testing organizations demonstrate conformance and support interoperability across biometric systems.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope of tests: Focuses on checking the binary vascular image record format (Type A Level 1 and Level 2 tests). Level 3 and other system-level tests (performance, robustness, security) are out of scope.
  • Mandatory format checks: Assertions include verification of the format identifier (e.g., "VIR\0"), version string (current version "010"), total record length, capture device ID and number of images.
  • Byte order and encoding: Multibyte quantities must be represented in big-endian order; bit order within a byte is defined (MSB first).
  • Image metadata and fields: Tests cover image width/height, gray scale depth (minimum dynamic range of 128 gray levels, at least one byte per intensity), scan resolution (pixels per centimetre), pixel aspect ratio, rotation angle encoding, image type and background flags.
  • Compression and image formats: Allowed compression algorithms are defined (lossless JPEG-LS - ISO/IEC 14495, JPEG2000 - ISO/IEC 15444; lossy JPEG - ISO/IEC 10918, and JPEG2000). Tests assert correct encoding when compression is used.
  • Illumination and capture descriptors: Illumination wavelength categories (visible, NIR, MIR) and other image header fields are included in assertions.
  • Conformance claim constraints: Implementations may claim conformance only to the specific ISO/IEC 19794-9 requirements tested and listed in an Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS).

Applications and who uses it

  • Testing laboratories and certification bodies use ISO/IEC 29109-9 to build conformance test suites and generate objective pass/fail reports for vascular biometric records.
  • Biometric vendors and integrators apply the methodology during development and QA to ensure their products produce standards‑compliant vascular image records.
  • System architects and procurement teams rely on conformance results to assess interoperability of vascular biometric components in multi-vendor environments.
  • Researchers benefit from a standardized test framework when evaluating new vascular-imaging techniques for compatibility with CBEFF/ISO formats.

Related standards

  • ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007 - Base biometric data interchange format for vascular image data (record structure and field definitions).
  • ISO/IEC 29109-1:2009 - Generalized conformance testing methodology (applies to Parts 2–10 etc.).
  • Image standards referenced - ISO/IEC 14495 (JPEG-LS), ISO/IEC 15444 (JPEG2000), ISO/IEC 10918 (JPEG).

ISO/IEC 29109-9:2011 is essential for producing verifiable, interoperable vascular biometric records and for establishing trust in biometric exchanges across systems and vendors.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of
ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information
technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of the joint technical committee is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as
an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

Introduction
ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007 specifies a data record interchange format for exchange of human vascular image
data among systems within a Common Biometric Exchange Formats Framework (CBEFF) data structure. The
data stored in a vascular data record often contains the metadata storing the subject-specific and image-
specific, as well as the technology being used. This part of ISO/IEC 29109 establishes tests for checking the
correctness of the binary record.
When vascular image data is transmitted among systems, it can be interfered with by noise due to the
transmission line. The received data might be incorrect during the exchange process. Therefore, there is a
need to conduct conformance tests of commercial products to determine whether the data conform to
ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007 before using the data for other purposes.
Vascular biometric technology is emerging or is under development by many research organizations. The
vascular image resources are also being used by many vendors, who have utilized the vascular technology as
a recognition or verification method in their systems. Currently, however, there is no standardized method for
conducting conformance tests of vascular image data that supports ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007 during the
exchange of vascular image data among systems. Application developers and implementers of different
organizations can interpret ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007 in different manners. Therefore, a standardized
conformance testing methodology is necessary for achieving interoperability among implementations.
This part of ISO/IEC 29109 supports those applications that require use of vascular image data according to
ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007. It defines a testing methodology to ensure conformance of a vendor’s application or
service to ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007. Thus, it is intended to:
⎯ establish elements of the conformance testing methodology framework that are specific to the vascular
image-based data record requirements of ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007 conformance testing;
⎯ define requirements and guidelines for specifying conformance test suites and related test methods for
measuring conformity of products and services to the vascular image data record requirements of
ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007; and
⎯ define testing and reporting procedures to be followed before, during, and after conformance testing.
This part of ISO/IEC 29109 is applicable to the development and use of conformity test method specifications,
conformity test suites for ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007 records, and conformance testing programs for
ISO/IEC 19794-9:2007 conformant products. It is intended primarily for use by testing organizations, but can
be applied by developers and users of test method specifications and test method implementations.
