Belt drives - Classical and narrow V-belts - Grooved pulleys (system based on datum width)
Cancels and replaces the second edition (1989). Specifies the principal dimensions of grooved pulleys for classical V-belts and narrow V-belts specified in the terminology system based on datum width. It is important that narrow belts are not used with pulleys uniquely designed for classical belts, and, on the other hand, that multiple belt drives are not used with joined V-belts.

Overview
ISO 4183 - Belt drives: Classical and narrow V-belts - Grooved pulleys (system based on datum width) is the international standard that specifies the principal dimensions, tolerances and key parameters for grooved pulleys used with classical V-belts (Y, Z, A, B, C, D, E) and narrow V-belts (SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC). The 2025 FDIS edition updates earlier editions and defines a datum-width‑based system to ensure consistent pulley geometry, belt seating and interchangeability.
Key topics and requirements
- Datum width as the basic dimension: The standard treats the datum width (w) and datum line as the primary reference for groove geometry and belt location.
- Groove profile dimensions: Principal groove measurements (w, b, h, e) and the permissible tolerances for groove pitch (e) and axial/radial runout (t) are specified. Sum of deviations on e for all grooves in a pulley is limited.
- Groove angles: Groove angles (examples: 38°, 36°, 34°, 32°) are assigned relative to datum diameters with a typical tolerance of ±0.5°. Angles are selected according to pulley diameter ranges.
- Datum diameters (d): Nominal datum diameters are chosen from the R40 preferred‑number series (ISO 3). Tables indicate preferred diameters for each groove/profile and corresponding runout tolerances.
- Minimum and maximum differences: Minimum allowable datum diameters per belt section are listed; maximum admissible differences between datum diameters of grooves used together in multiple‑belt drives are defined (e.g., Y = 0.3 mm; other profiles up to 0.6 mm).
- Quality, finish and inspection: Surface finish, balancing and inspection requirements are referenced to ISO 254 and ISO 255 for pulley quality and geometrical inspection.
- Design guidance: The standard advises against using narrow belts on pulleys designed exclusively for classical belts and warns against multiple belt drives with joined V-belts.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 4183 is used by:
- Pulley and V‑belt manufacturers for design and production of grooved pulleys
- Mechanical and power‑transmission design engineers specifying belt drives in industrial equipment
- Maintenance and reliability engineers selecting replacement pulleys and belts
- OEMs and procurement teams requiring conformity and interchangeability in rotating machinery
Typical applications include industrial power transmission systems such as conveyors, fans, pumps, compressors, HVAC and agricultural machinery where compatible pulley/belt interfaces and reliable belt seating are critical.
