Overview
IEC 60062:2016/AMD1:2019 is an important amendment to the international standard IEC 60062, which governs marking codes for resistors and capacitors. Prepared by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) technical committee 40, this amendment introduces a special two-character code system for capacitors, designed to enhance clarity and efficiency in component marking, especially for small electronic parts. This amendment addresses practical challenges in labeling, improving the legibility and standardization of capacitance markings on electronic components.
Key Topics
Special Two-Character Coding System for Capacitors
The amendment introduces a new two-character code system for marking capacitance values, tailored for capacitors utilizing E6, E12, or E24 series values. This system is particularly useful when the surface area available for marking is limited and three or more characters cannot be printed legibly.Code Composition
The special code consists of:- A code letter representing the two significant digits of the capacitance value, based on a standardized Table (Table B.1).
- A numeric code indicating the multiplier (Table B.2), which defines the unit scale (from pF to µF).
These two characters appear without spaces, creating a concise but unambiguous indication of capacitance.
Standardized Letter and Number Assignments
Table B.1 associates each letter with specific significant numbers from the E24 series (e.g., 'A' = 1.0, 'L' = 2.7, 'S' = 4.7), while Table B.2 covers multipliers (e.g., '0' = 1pF, '4' = 10nF, '7' = 10µF). The coding is case-sensitive.Compatibility and Adoption
This coding method aligns with previously established industry standards, such as ANSI/EIA 198-1 for ceramic dielectric capacitors, and has been adopted by a variety of manufacturers for surface mount devices (SMD) multilayer capacitors and small film capacitors. A similar system is also used by CENELEC for certain multilayer ceramic capacitor specifications.Example
The code L4 indicates a capacitance value of 27 nF:- 'L' represents the significant digits "2.7"
- '4' represents a multiplier of 10,000 pF (or 10 nF)
Combined, they give 2.7 × 10 nF = 27 nF.
Applications
Component Labeling in Electronic Manufacturing
This amendment provides a standardized marking framework for capacitors used in compact electronic devices where space limitations hinder traditional marking approaches.Quality Control and Inventory Management
Manufacturers and distributors benefit from consistent and concise capacitance codes, facilitating easier identification and verification during production, assembly, and maintenance.Standardization in Global Supply Chains
Harmonized marking codes help reduce confusion and errors in multinational supply chains, supporting interoperability among varied manufacturers and regions.Consumer Electronics and Industrial Equipment
Enables smaller form-factor components with legible markings suitable for consumer gadgets, automotive electronics, telecom devices, and industrial control systems.

Annex B
(informative)
Special two-character code system for capacitors
A special two-character code system exists for the marking of capacitance values with two
significant numbers with only two characters in total.
This code system is particularly suited for situations where the marking of capacitance values
of the E6, E12 or E24 series is desired, but the surface area available for marking does not
permit the printing of three or more characters in a sufficiently readable size, as it is required
to mark the capacitor with a regular three-character code as given in 4.3.2 of this document,
plus, possibly, other required codes.
The special two-character code is composed of:
– a code letter for the significant numbers of the capacitance value, as given in Table B.1,
directly succeeded by
– a code number for the multiplier, as given in Table B.2,
without any space in between.
Table B.1 – Coding of the significant numbers of the E24
