Overview
IEC 60335-2-79:2002/AMD1:2004 is an important amendment to the international standard covering safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, with a specific focus on high pressure cleaners and steam cleaners. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment builds upon the original part 2-79 of the IEC 60335 standard series, addressing particular safety requirements for these specialized cleaning devices. It is essential for manufacturers, safety engineers, and regulatory bodies involved in the design, testing, and certification of high pressure and steam cleaning appliances.
This amendment broadens the scope to include industrial and commercial steam cleaners with specific water container capacities and rated pressures, ensuring comprehensive safety compliance across various applications.
Key Topics
Scope Extension: Applicability now includes industrial and commercial steam cleaners with a water container capacity ≤ 1000 liters, a rated pressure ≤ 3.2 MPa, and a product of capacity and pressure ≤ 300.
New Definitions: Introduction of terms such as:
- Water-suction cleaning appliance: Devices aspirating aqueous solutions potentially containing detergents.
- Motorized cleaning head: An accessory motor supplied by the appliance and attached to hand-held hoses or tubes.
Marking and Instructions:
- Mandatory marking with IEC symbols for steam cleaners (IEC 60417-5597) and motorized cleaning heads (IEC 60417-5935).
- Sound and vibration emission levels must be specified; ear protection warnings required if noise exceeds 85 dB(A).
- Clear guidance on safety hazards pertaining to electrical current-carrying hoses.
Protection and Construction Requirements:
- Enhanced moisture resistance criteria for motorized cleaning heads.
- Impact and drop tests ensure durability and resistance to liquids.
- High pressure cleaners must have switches or contactors enabling all-pole disconnection.
- Stability mandates to prevent injury due to moving parts or transport rollers on heavy appliances.
Electrical Safety Enhancements:
- Requirements for leakage current and electric strength tests for hoses and electrical components using saline solutions to simulate operating conditions.
- Power input measurements specify separate assessment for motorized cleaning heads.
Updated References:
- Incorporates updates from IEC 60704-1 (acoustical noise testing) and ISO 5349 (hand-transmitted vibration assessment), ensuring harmonized test methodologies.
Applications
This amendment is critical for the design, manufacture, and certification of household, industrial, and commercial cleaning appliances utilizing high pressure water jets or steam, including:
- Residential high pressure washers for cleaning external surfaces, vehicles, and outdoor equipment.
- Commercial steam cleaners used in food processing plants, healthcare facilities, or large-scale sanitization applications.
- Industrial cleaning equipment for factories and maintenance operations needing high-capacity steam or water systems with controlled pressure.
- Accessory devices such as motorized cleaning heads and power outlets for hoses, which must comply with specific safety and marking requirements.
- Appliances featuring current-carrying flexible hoses necessitating rigorous electrical safety verification.
By adhering to this amendment, manufacturers ensure users’ safety, comply with international regulations, and reduce liability risks stemming from electric shock, mechanical injury, noise exposure, and vibration hazards.
