Overview
IEC 60670-22:2003/AMD1:2015 is an important amendment to the international standard focusing on boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories used in household and similar fixed electrical installations. This amendment, prepared by IEC Technical Committee 23B, addresses particular requirements for connecting boxes and enclosures, enhancing the safety, reliability, and performance criteria for electrical accessory enclosures.
The amendment updates definitions, general requirements, testing procedures, ratings, markings, mechanical strength, heat resistance, and other critical specifications to ensure these connecting boxes and enclosures comply with contemporary electrical safety and interoperability standards worldwide.
Key Topics
Definitions and Terminology
The amendment revises key definitions like "connecting box with integrated clamping units," "terminal," and "connecting device" to clarify design and functional aspects (e.g., permanently retained clamping units vs. provisions for subsequent incorporation).General Requirements
Connecting devices incorporated into boxes must comply with the IEC 60998 series, while integrated clamping units must meet IEC 60999 standards. Specific allowances exist for some countries to use terminal blocks complying with IEC 60947-7 standards.Testing and Compliance
Boxes with provisions for subsequent incorporation of clamping units are tested with manufacturer-recommended clamping units. Connecting devices compliant with IEC 60998 series need not undergo repeated testing, facilitating easier compliance procedures.Electrical Ratings and Markings
Rated voltages for connecting devices range between 125 V and 1,500 V (AC/DC), with clear guidance on marking current ratings on enclosures to match tested specifications, enhancing traceability and safety in installations.Mechanical Strength and Heat Resistance
The amendment specifies acceptable mechanical damage limits that do not compromise creepage distances or protection against electric shock. It also mandates temperature rise limits during normal use with compliance verified through detailed testing.Creepage Distances and Insulation
The amendment revises requirements for creepage distances, clearances, and insulation distances to ensure robust electrical isolation and protection, excluding boxes with floating terminals or specific device classifications.Informative Annexes
Annex AA and Annex BB provide schematic illustrations of different connecting box configurations and connecting devices, facilitating better understanding of physical and functional designs.
Applications
The IEC 60670-22 amendment is essential for manufacturers, designers, and regulatory bodies involved in:
- Electrical accessory manufacturing for household and similar electrical fixed installations
- Designing connecting boxes and enclosures that ensure safe and secure electrical connections
- Developing products that meet international safety and interchangeability standards
- Performing type testing and certification for compliance with global standards
- Ensuring installation safety and enhancing product reliability in residential, commercial, and industrial settings
- Supporting cross-border recognition of electrical accessory compliance through harmonized testing and marking
