FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which
may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent
the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at https://patents.iec.ch. IEC
shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

4 Test procedure
4.1 Purpose
To determine the ability of the DUT to withstand certain climatic test conditions or a sequence
of such climatic test conditions. For this purpose, the individual climatic tests described under
4.2.2 to 4.2.6 hereinafter can be carried out as separate tests. However, when a climatic
sequence is required, this sequence shall be as specified below. The damp heat steady state
test is to assess the suitability of the DUT for use or storage under conditions of high relative
humidity, or both.
4.2 Procedure
4.2.1 General

4.2.2 Dry heat
This test shall be carried out in accordance with test Ba or, if in relation to the test facilities, the
DUT is to be considered as an appreciably heat-dissipating specimen, with test Bc of
IEC 60068-2-2.
The duration period shall be 16 h. During the last 2 h of the dry heat exposure time, the DUT
shall be energized as specified and as follows:
a) for DUTs for continuous duty, the coil voltage shall be applied continuously for 2 h;
b) for DUTs for short-time or intermittent duty, the coil voltage shall be applied by pulses at
the number of cycles per hour and the duty factor, both as specified for the product;
c) contacts shall be loaded as specified.
Immediately following the 2 h operating period and still under dry heat exposure, all DUTs shall
have a functional test as specified.
4.2.3 Cold
This test shall be carried out in accordance with test Aa (sudden change of temperature) or test
Ab (gradual change of temperature) of IEC 60068-2-1.
The duration period shall be 2 h.
At the end of the conditioning period and before removal from the chamber, the DUT shall be
energized for 100 cycles at the coil voltage value as specified.
During the operating tests, all contacts shall be loaded as specified. The contact function shall
be checked as specified.
4.2.4 Low air pressure
This test shall be carried out in accordance with test M of IEC 60068-2-13. The duration period
shall be 30 min at normal ambient temperature.
At the end of the test period, and while the DUT is still under low pressure, a dielectric test
voltage as specified shall be applied between:
a) the two ends of the coil connected together (positive) and all other terminals together with
the exposed conductive parts (negative);
b) the terminals of an open circuit contact; break contacts shall be opened for this test.
During the dielectric test, there shall be no flashover or breakdown of the insulation of the DUT.
4.2.5 Damp heat, cyclic
This test shall be carried out when specified.
Upon completion of the cycle, the DUT shall be removed from the chamber and exposed to the
recovery conditions specified.
This test shall be carried out in accordance with test Db variant 2 of IEC 60068-2-30, where
one cycle consists of 12 h at 25 °C followed by 12 h at the specified upper temperature. The
number of cycles shall be one or more as specified.
Upon completion of the cycles, the DUT shall be removed from the chamber and exposed to
the recovery conditions specified.
– 8 – IEC 63522-9:2025 © IEC 2025
After recovery, the DUT shall be immediately subjected to the cold test.
4.2.6 Damp heat steady state
This test shall be carried out in accordance with test Cab of IEC 60068-2-78. During the
exposure time of the DUTs, one half of the number of samples exposed shall have a potential
of (100 ± 10) V DC or as specified, applied between the two ends of the coil connected together
(positive) and all other terminals together with the exposed conductive parts (negative). When
assessing the suitability for storage conditions only, it is not necessary to apply voltage.
At the end of the conditioning period, the DUTs shall be removed from the chamber and exposed
to the recovery conditions specified by the manufacturer.
4.3 Conditions
Unless otherwise described in this document the conditions of IEC 63522-0 are applicable.
The conditions to be specified are the following.
For tests of 4.2.2 to 4.2.5:
a) temperatures and humidity conditions of the tests;
b) degree of severity of the climatic conditions and recovery conditions;
c) coil voltage value, contact load during dry heat exposure, last 2 h;
d) details of the functional test after dry heat exposure;
e) whether or not the damp heat, cyclic, first cycle test is required;
f) for the cold test, method Aa or Ab;
g) coil voltage value, contact load after cold exposure for 100 cycles and criteria of contact
function, if required;
h) whether or not the low pressure exposure is required;
