Overview

IEC 60320-2-3:1998/AMD1:2004 is an important international amendment to the IEC 60320-2-3 standard, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This amendment specifically addresses appliance couplers designed for household and similar general purposes that require a degree of protection higher than IPX0. The standard focuses on connectors for Class II electrical appliances, ensuring safety, compatibility, and reliability for use in domestic, commercial, and light industrial environments.

The document supports the safe connection of circular supply cords to electrical appliances with protection levels surpassing IPX0, signifying improved resistance against moisture and other environmental factors. This amendment refines performance requirements, dimensional compatibility, terminal specifications, moisture resistance, insulation properties, temperature rise, mechanical strength, and creepage distances.

Key Topics

  • Scope
Appliances covered include Class II electrical equipment for household, commercial, and light industrial use. The connectors ensure connection of flexible supply cords with enhanced protection standards.

  • Rated Current
The amendment defines standard current ratings of 6 A or 10 A, supporting a wide range of light electrical appliances with corresponding conductor sizes.

  • Dimensions and Compatibility
Detailed dimensional requirements and compatibility testing with appropriate gauges ensure connectors fit only correct appliance inlets to avoid mismatches and possible hazards.

    • 6 A connectors use standard sheets C and D
    • 10 A connectors use standard sheets A and B
    • Usage of insertion force limits of 60 N guarantees safe assembly and disassembly.
  • Terminals and Conductors
Removable plug connectors are to have terminals sized to accept conductors with nominal cross-sectional areas of 0.75 mm² and 1 mm², ensuring proper mechanical and electrical contact.

  • Moisture Resistance and Degree of Protection
The amendment mandates moisture resistance test requirements appropriate for connectors rated to provide protection higher than IPX0. This ensures appliance safety in damp or cold conditions.

  • Insulation and Electric Strength
Specific limits on insulation resistance, dielectric strength, and maximum cable diameters are described, aligned with IEC cord types to guarantee electrical safety and performance.

  • Temperature Rise and Mechanical Strength
Requirements for testing under load, including temperature rise limits with cord specifications and mechanical drop testing (500 falls at ambient 35 °C), ensure durability and longevity.

  • Creepage and Clearance Distances
Minimum electrical clearance and creepage distances are established for 6 A and 10 A accessories to prevent arcing and ensure long-term electrical insulation integrity.

Applications

IEC 60320-2-3:1998/AMD1:2004 applies to various household, commercial, and light industrial electrical appliances that require enhanced protection, including:

  • Small kitchen appliances
  • Personal care devices (e.g., hair dryers, electric shavers)
  • Office equipment requiring dependable moisture-resistant power connection
  • Medical equipment used in home or light commercial settings
  • Portable tools and devices operating under damp conditions

This standard ensures that appliance couplers used in such scenarios provide a reliable, safe, and standardized interface between the device and power supply, reducing risk of electrical hazards while improving user safety and appliance lifespan.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60320-1 – General requirements for appliance couplers for household and similar purposes
  • IEC 60227 and IEC 60245 – Standards defining characteristics of flexible cords compatible with connectors
  • IEC 60335 series – Appliance safety standards referencing accessory requirements
  • IP rating standards (IEC 60529) – Defining degrees of protection (IPX ratings) against ingress of water and solids

Adherence to IEC 60320-2-3:1998/AMD1:2004 supports compliance with broader IEC electrotechnical frameworks, ensuring product safety, global market acceptance, and interoperability between appliances and power cords.

shall be possible to insert the primary gauge fully into the appliance inlet with a force not
exceeding 60 N. The supplementary gauges shall be pushed over the bar.
Planes shall be provided with the primary gauge to check pin and shroud lengths; successful
engagement of the supplementary gauge checks the appliance inlet outer recess.
9.4 Replace the existing text of this subclause with the following:
Replacement:
It shall not be possible to engage:
– connectors for class II equipment with appliance inlets for other equipment;
– 6 A connectors into 10 A inlets.
Compliance is checked by inspection, by manual test and by means of the appropriate gauge.
