Overview
IEC 60320-2-3:1998/AMD1:2004, Amendment 1 is an internationally recognized amendment published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It specifically addresses appliance couplers for household and similar general purposes, focusing on those with a degree of protection higher than IPX0. This amendment refines technical requirements to ensure safer and more reliable connections for electrical appliances, especially where higher ingress protection is essential. The changes primarily impact dimensions, compatibility, rating, cable connections, mechanical strength, and testing protocols.
Keywords: IEC 60320-2-3, appliance coupler, IPX0, electrical accessories, international standards, household appliance connectors, Amendment 1, electrical safety, IP rating
Key Topics
Scope and Usage
- Appliance couplers covered are intended for class II electrical appliances used in domestic, commercial, and light industrial environments.
- Enhanced protection is provided for connections requiring higher ingress resistance than IPX0.
Standard Ratings
- Updated current ratings: appliance couplers rated at either 6 A or 10 A.
- Dimensions and compatibility requirements ensure that 6 A connectors cannot be used with 10 A inlets, enhancing safety and preventing mismatches.
Terminals and Cable Connections
- Requirements for terminals in rewirable connectors to accommodate flexible conductors with nominal cross-sectional areas of 0.75 mm² and 1 mm².
- Guidelines on cord types and cross-sections for different connectors, supporting robust and safe cable terminations.
Mechanical Strength and Testing
- Mechanical strength is verified using drop tests (500 falls) at a specific ambient temperature with fully assembled connectors and plug connectors.
- Testing procedures outlined for verifying connector engagement and compatibility using standardized gauges.
- Temperature rise checks require use of thermoplastic-insulated cords of specific lengths and cross-sections.
Moisture Resistance and Electrical Insulation
- Specific test requirements for moisture resistance based on rated current and cross-sectional area of attached cords.
- Insulation resistance and electric strength parameters are defined, including maximum allowable cord diameters for different cable types.
Applications
IEC 60320-2-3:1998/AMD1:2004 is highly relevant for:
Manufacturers of Electrical Appliances
Ensures appliance couplers used are compliant with international standards, enhancing product reliability and safety, particularly in environments where equipment is exposed to moisture or dust.Testing Laboratories
Provides updated guidance on testing procedures for connectors with higher IP ratings, including methods for verifying dimensions, engagement, and insulation.Design and Engineering Teams
Reference for designing compliant class II electrical appliances for household, commercial, and light industrial use, ensuring proper selection of cords, terminations, and connectors.Quality Assurance Professionals

Compliance is checked by measurement and where relevant by use of the appropriate gauge.
When the appropriate gauge of Figure 1 or Figure 1A is used, it shall be possible to insert the
connector fully with a force not exceeding 60 N. To verify correct and full insertion the gauge
insert shall be provided with an aperture.
When the appropriate primary and supplementary gauges of Figures 2 and 2A are used it
shall be possible to insert the primary gauge fully into the appliance inlet with a force not
exceeding 60 N. The supplementary gauges shall be pushed over the bar.
Planes shall be provided with the primary gauge to check pin and shroud lengths; successful
engagement of the supplementary gauge checks the appliance inlet outer recess.
9.4 Replace the existing text of this subclause with the following:
Replacement:
It shall not be possible to engage:
– connectors for class II equipment with appliance inlets for other equipment;
– 6 A connectors into 10 A inlets.
Compliance is checked by inspection, by manual test and by means of the appropriate gauge.
