Overview

IEC 61754-15:2009 specifies the standard interface dimensions for the Type LSH connector family used in fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. This second edition (with the January 2014 corrigendum included) updates and clarifies the figures and dimensional tolerances for LSH plugs, adaptors and active-device interfaces. The Type LSH family is characterised by a nominal 2.5 mm ferrule diameter, a push‑click‑pull coupling mechanism and alignment via a rigid bore or resilient sleeve.

Key Topics

  • Standard interfaces defined: The document defines seven interfaces (simplex and duplex PC, simplex and duplex APC 8°, adaptor interfaces, and an active device interface) so manufacturers can ensure mechanical interoperability.
  • Interface dimensions and tolerances: Detailed dimensional tables and drawings establish critical diameters, lengths, angles and float limits to ensure consistent mating and optical alignment.
  • Ferrule grades and mechanical coding: Ferrule size grades and mechanical codification are specified to control mating fit and performance.
  • Adaptor and sleeve requirements: Specifications for adaptors (including resilient sleeve acceptance force and gauge pin use) and optional adaptor flanges are included.
  • Panel cutouts and active device mounting: Informative annex provides recommended panel cutout dimensions for simplex and duplex adaptors.
  • Reference standards: Normative links to related standards such as IEC 61755-3 (optical endface geometry) and ISO 8015 (drawing tolerancing) are cited.

Applications

IEC 61754-15 is essential for anyone involved in the mechanical design, manufacture or procurement of fibre optic connectors and related hardware:

  • Connector and adaptor manufacturers use the standard to design compliant Type LSH plugs, adaptors and active-device receptacles.
  • Transceiver and active device designers implement the active-device interface dimensions to ensure direct compatibility.
  • System integrators and data centre engineers rely on the standard for panel cutouts and mechanical interoperability planning.
  • Test laboratories and quality assurance teams use the dimensional and ferrule grade criteria for acceptance testing and interchangeability verification.
  • Procurement and spec authors reference IEC 61754-15 when specifying Type LSH interfaces for new equipment.

Related standards

  • IEC 61754 series - other connector interface standards
  • IEC 61755-3 - fibre optic connector optical interface (endface geometry)
  • ISO 8015 - technical drawing tolerancing principles

By following IEC 61754-15, organisations ensure mechanical interoperability and reliable mating performance of Type LSH fibre optic connector interfaces, reducing field compatibility issues and supporting consistent product sourcing.

NOTE 1 A chamfer or radius is allowed to a maximum depth of 1 mm from the ferrule endface.
NOTE 2 Dimension M is given for plug endface when not mated. It is movable by a certain axial compression
force, with direct contacting endfaces, and therefore dimension M is variable. Ferrule compression force should be
7,8 N to 11,8 N when the dimension M is 11,9 mm to 12 mm.
NOTE 3 AA and AB correspond to a mechanical codification.
NOTE 4 See the IEC 61755-3 series.
NOTE 5 Dimension EA is defined as an angle between two planes: one plane, plane A, passes through the axis
of the ferrule and the axis of symmetry of the body of the angled endface connector plug. The other plane, plane
B, passes through the axis of the ferrule and the normal to the tangent plane at the axis of the ferrule endface.
NOTE 6 Only for APC version.

NOTE The connector alignment feature is a resilient sleeve. The feature should accept a gauge pin to the centre of
the adaptor with a force of 2 N to 5,9 N under the condition that another gauge pin is inserted into the feature from
the other side. The centre of the adaptor is defined by the right side position of the dimension M.
