Dynamic modules - Part 3-1: Performance specification templates - Dynamic channel equalizers

IEC 62343-3-1:2016 provides a performance specification template for the dynamic channel equalizer (DCE). The object of this performance specification template is to provide a framework for the preparation of detail specifications on the product or performance of dynamic channel equalizers. Additional specification parameters may be included for product specifications or performance specifications. However, specification parameters specified in this standard should not be removed from the product specifications or performance specifications. Technical information regarding dynamic channel equalizers and their applications in DWDM systems is described in IEC TR 62343-6-1. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2010. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical change with respect to the previous edition: modification of terms and definitions and references.

Overview

IEC 62343-3-1:2016 is the IEC performance specification template for dynamic channel equalizers (DCE) used in DWDM systems. This second edition (2016) replaces the 2010 version and updates terms, definitions and references. The standard provides a framework for preparing detailed product or performance specifications for DCE modules, defining mandatory specification parameters, test-report requirements and minimum test arrangements for non‑connectorized devices. It references test methods and measurement conditions to ensure consistent evaluation of optical equalizers.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Template for performance specifications of dynamic channel equalizers (DCE) in DWDM networks. Additional parameters can be added but mandated parameters must not be removed.
  • Test report: Fully documented test reports and supporting evidence are required for inspection and acceptance.
  • Dimensions & sample size: Mechanical dimensions should follow applicable IEC interface standards or manufacturer drawings; sample size and sequencing to be specified in the relevant specification.
  • Connectorization: Tests in the standard apply to non‑connectorized DCEs; connectorized devices must meet IEC 61753‑021‑2 connector requirements.
  • Environmental setup: Minimum 1.5 m of fibre/cable per port for climatic/environmental tests; channel spacings follow ITU‑T G.694.1 unless otherwise specified.
  • Measurement details: Several instrument and source requirements are specified (example: source spectral width ≤ 1 GHz, source stability ≤ 0.25 GHz, detector linearity ±0.05 dB, detector sensitivity < −80 dBm).
  • Mandatory test parameters (Table 1):
    • Insertion loss (IEC 61300‑3‑29)
    • Return loss (IEC 61300‑3‑6)
    • Polarization dependent loss (PDL) (IEC 61300‑3‑2)
    • Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) (IEC 61300‑3‑32)
    • Channel non‑uniformity (input/output), ripple, channel crosstalk, adjacent channel attenuation (IEC 61300‑3‑29)
    • Chromatic dispersion (IEC 61300‑3‑38)
    • Maximum input power (IEC 61300‑2‑14)
    • Several items are listed as “method under consideration” (e.g., in‑band extinction ratio, out‑of‑band attenuation, channel response time, channel frequency range, channel spacing).

Applications and users

This standard is intended for:

  • Manufacturers of dynamic channel equalizers and DWDM modules preparing product or performance specifications.
  • Test laboratories performing conformity and performance testing against IEC templates.
  • System integrators and network operators who specify DCE performance for DWDM systems.
  • Procurement and QA teams ensuring consistent acceptance criteria for optical equalizers.

Using IEC 62343-3-1 helps ensure reproducible measurements, clearer supplier specifications, and reliable DCE performance in optical transport networks.

INTRODUCTION
A dynamic channel equalizer (DCE) is used to compensate and equalize the variations in
channel power spectrum as the optical channels propagate through DWDM networks. A
typical DCE module is an electrically controlled two port device, which controls the time
varying power levels of multichannel input signals such that, at the output channel, powers
are nominally equalized.
