Overview

IEC 61076-2-101:2003/AMD1:2006 is an important amendment to the international standard governing circular connectors for electronic equipment. This amendment focuses on M8 and M12 circular connectors, specifically detailing the specifications for connectors with screw- or snap-locking mechanisms designed for low voltage applications.

Issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment builds on the original 2003 publication, ensuring enhanced compatibility, safety, and performance for industrial and electronic connectivity. It introduces key updates around connector codings and technical parameters relevant to industrial environments, including support for Industrial Ethernet and common fieldbus systems.

Key Topics

  • Connector Types Covered

    • M8 connectors with screw-locking or snap-locking.
    • M12 connectors with screw-locking, including configurations for 4-pole, 5-pole, and 4+PE interfaces.
  • Coding Specifications

    • Introduction of integrated coding types for M12 connectors:
      • D-coding: Designed for 4-pole connectors supporting frequencies of 100 MHz and above, targeting Industrial Ethernet applications.
      • B-coding: Configured for 5-pole connectors used in industrial fieldbuses such as Profibus DP and Interbus.
      • P-coding: For 5-pole connectors in low voltage applications, providing a 4+PE interface with protection earth contact arranged for safe sequential connection.
    • Codings B, D, and P prevent incompatible or cross connections ensuring reliability and safety.
  • Mechanical and Electrical Requirements

    • Maximum insertion and withdrawal forces are specified for connectors depending on the number of poles.
    • Test procedures for correct mating, resistance, signal integrity, and environmental robustness.
    • Detailed pin and contact arrangements, including contact marking and dimensions.
  • Application of Test Groups

    • Polarization and keying tests to prevent incorrect mating.
    • Electrical performance tests such as insertion loss, return loss, NEXT (Near-End Crosstalk), and impedance for balanced cabling in D-coded connectors.
    • Connection method tests verifying durability and signal integrity under operational conditions.
  • Design Recommendations

    • Recommended outer diameter for female connector bodies to improve safety against unintended matings between differently coded connectors.
    • Detailed illustrations and dimensions for correct implementation and verification.

Applications

The IEC 61076-2-101 amendment addresses growing industrial needs for robust low voltage connectivity solutions in demanding environments:

  • Industrial Ethernet Networks

    • High-frequency resilient connections in harsh industrial applications.
    • Supports seamless integration of Ethernet-based protocols with reliable circular connectors.
  • Fieldbus Communications

    • Ensures compatibility for Profibus DP and Interbus systems with 5-pole B-coded connectors.
    • Guarantees stable communication links through controlled mating and locking mechanisms.
  • General Low Voltage Electronic Equipment

    • Provides secure interfaces for equipment requiring 4-pole or 5-pole connections with protective earth contacts.
    • Enhances safety with sequential PE contact design in P-coded connectors.
  • Automation and Control Systems

    • Optimal for machine-to-machine connections requiring compact yet secure connectors.
    • Reduces risk of misconnection through specific coding enforcement.

This standard amendment thus enables equipment manufacturers, system integrators, and end users to select connectors with assured compliance, safety, and electrical performance suited for modern industrial and electronic applications.

Related Standards

Implementers and users of IEC 61076-2-101 should also consider related IEC standards for a comprehensive understanding of connector and electronic equipment requirements:

  • IEC 61076 Series

    • Covers a wide range of connectors for electronic equipment, outlining various forms and locking mechanisms.
  • IEC 60512

    • Specifies electrical test methods and mechanical tests relevant to connectors ensuring reliability and durability.
  • EN 50289-1-14

    • Addresses cable and connector characteristics for signal attenuation and coupling relevant to high-frequency data transmission.
  • Fieldbus and Industrial Ethernet Protocol Standards

    • Relevant industrial communication protocols such as Profibus, Interbus, and Ethernet-based systems that rely on connectors specified in this amendment.

By aligning with these standards, manufacturers and users can ensure interoperability, maximum safety, and optimal performance of electronic equipment connectivity solutions.
